We have a calendar hung on the kitchen wall-any appointments involving both of us we mark in appropriate day using a handheld ink dispensing instrument.
This revolutionary system is still just within its 35 year trial period, but results so far have been good.

The paper calendar worked great from the time of Cesar right up through the 20th century and will still work with major limits compared to an electronic calendar.
Now in the 21st century I use a iPhone as does my wife. We have the calendar on the iPhone & iPads all synchronized. Either of us can add or change a shared event and we each have private calendars for events that don't need to be shared. I happen to use Microsoft Exchange for all of that. I know it can be done with Apples "cloud" features. You can share pictures and music and email if you want. Go find a Apple store and go talk to a "genius" there and suffer through their BS marketing and they can set it all up for you and you can walk out with the calendar functioning like you want. I feel sure the other smart phones can sync all of that as well.

Check into google calendars. You should be able to do what you want there.

Wife and I share calendars via Apple's iCloud across all our devices. We have Apple computers, iPhones and iPads though.
The calendar on the counter thing never really worked well because I was terrible at looking at it. Google Calendars would probably provide similar functionality and may even be better than iCloud which I actually hate. It doesn't integrate well with anything except Apples programs (Outlook integration comes and goes and is unreliable). We've made it work but I think it would have been better to do google calendars.

+1 on google calendar.
One family account, with five iphones subscribed. No one has the excuse they didn't have it on their calendar. You can edit and add to the family calendar from your own calendar (without logging into a different account). I am also subscribed on my outlook desktop calendar at work, and family calendar is overlayed in a different color.

drive a nail thru the blackberry, hang it on the wall, and use a dry erase marker to write on the back of it
