ASTORIA — An argument between fishermen and loggers at an Astoria tavern turned into a street brawl.

Police went to Annies Uppertown Tavern Saturday night after a report of at least 20 people fighting in the street.

The dispute began with a bachelor party in the bar for a group of loggers. They argued with fishermen about which occupation was better and which job paid more money.

The bartender told them to take it outside. The fight broke up when officers arrived. No one was arrested because of what police called “mutual combat.”

COQUILLE, Ore. (AP) — Coos Bay authorities are looking for an assailant after a 55-year-old man was found dead on a driveway.
Coos County District Attorney R. Paul Frasier says authorities have launched a homicide investigation.
He says Randall Leroy Harless was found with severe injuries Saturday night and transported to a local hospital, where he died.
Frasier says an exact cause of death will be known after an autopsy is performed.
Frasier say police are looking for a male about 5 feet, 10 inches tall weighing between 180 and 200 pounds who was seen near where Harless was found.

I used to fly into Astoria daily - beautiful little town. I remember it mostly for the elk (they used to hang out at the airport, particularly on the runways making for occasional white-knuckle takeoffs and landings) and the pretty girl at the hotel where I used to stay. Never saw the gritty side of it, but there's not much industry there aside from fish and timber. Iirc Georgia Pacific (paper products) does a lot of materials sourcing from out of there.

Just goes to show there are jerks and testosterone-laden ape-men everywhere, unfortunately though.

Handsome Husband Steve has been working in Coos Bay for about a year. He's real, real tired of it. He's doing the electrical on the big addition for hospital. Sounds like the area may need more hospital beds.

Coos Bay could be beautiful - it has that big bay & estuary. All they think about tho is extraction - logging, mining, shipping coal to China using their new subsidized RR.

BTW, Waldport is probably the most meth'd up town on the coast.

Hogs eat Coos County farmer, death investigation underway

RIVERTON — Coos County authorities are trying to figure out how a local farmer ended up being eaten by his hogs.

Terry Vance Garner, 69, died last Wednesday at his property off Highway 42S, near Riverton.

Several hours after Garner went out to feed his animals — which included several hogs that each weighed 700 pounds or more — one of his family members found Garner’s dentures in the hog enclosure, Coos County District Attorney Paul Frasier said.

The family member subsequently found Garner’s body in several pieces, after most of it had been consumed by the hogs in the enclosure, Frasier said.

Coos County sheriff’s investigators do not know how Garner died. He may have suffered a heart attack or other health problem after entering the hog enclosure, Frasier said.

Investigators are also looking into the possibility that the hogs knocked Garner to the ground before killing and eating him. Frasier said investigators learned that at least one of the hogs had previously bitten or behaved aggressively toward Garner. Foul play is another possibility being investigated.

I'm from a logging town. Fighting is a leisure pastime. I'm surprised the fishermen and loggers were still fighting when the cops arrived. Where I'm from, fights tend to last about twenty seconds.
