Win 8.1 vs Win 7 complaint resolution thread.

Okay, so not everything can be fixed, but complain here and maybe someone will answer your problem. We're only going to talk about 8.1 since it's a free upgrade and has enabled some of these things. 1.) I hate not having a Start button. Look at the bottom left corner. 2.) I hate booting to the new start screen and want to start on the desktop. Right click on the taskbar, properties, go to the navigation tab, check the box that says go to the desktop instead of Start. 3.) the Start screen is annoying and jarring. Go to the same menu as above, check use my desktop background as Start. (this may or may not help, but it's there now) 4.) It's not an Apple. Oh well.

One of mine... Annoyed by the new way the default search works to search the Internet as well and not just the PC Turned off results from Bing in the settings. (I do like this on my phone, just not on my PC, I find it weird).

I had to load Office 365 onto my wife's computer. Wow! It looks like a downgrade. The interface looks like something from 1980's MS-DOS days.

I haven't played with Office 365, does it still look like the nearly greyscale with some tiny color added to it like Office 2013? Even though it looks simpler than older ones, we still use it for stuff at the office that no other suite can do.

I bought a new puter several weeks ago, it came with windoze 8. I have windoze 7 ready to install but have held off. I wanted to give 8 a chance, to see if I could get used to it and compare it objectively. It still sux. I tried that free demo of office-lite but it didn't load right. still don't have outlook. I'll load up my office 87 ( ) when I stick 7 in there.

I still can't figure out why people think it sucks quite that bad. If the Start screen is that annoying, just pin the stuff to taskbar and boot to desktop. How often do you constantly launch new apps anyway? Is it because people are trying to mix using the tablet-style apps and desktop apps at once? Because yeah, that does suck, but I haven't found a store app that's useful enough to use on a desktop anyway.

but here's what else I don't like about it: It forced me to password protect the puter, which was unnecessary in it's environment. Nuther wasted step. Maybe there was a way around that but I couldn't come up with it. With firefox, it won't remember passwords and not remember history at the same time. Didn't have that problem with 7 or XP. So now I have to log on every time I go to pelican, my home page, or e-bay, or trivia quiz, or any other website that's password protected. Whole bunch more wasted steps. Then there's the "find on this page" feature, which is cleverly hidden now. I used to be able to find it, I'm sure it's there somewhere. There's several other common functions that are hidden or moved that i can't name right now. There are things that it simply won't let me do. It's as if they decided I was too dumb to do it my way so I have to do it there way, I already get too much of that from the gubmint. The puter runs fast. It boots up fast. It's stable. It does everything I need it to do. But the OS looks like it's designed for a hand-held app, lots of functions are hidden or gone, I see it as a big ole giant steaming pipe of compromise. Lots of stuff I don't need and don't want, many of the features I like and am used to are either NLA or hidden. Way too many wasted steps that get old and repetitive after a while. I don't own an i-pad, or smart phone, or any other type of hand held device or lap top and that is on porpoise. So why should I run an OS that is designed for them? AND IT DOAN HAVE SOLITAIRE OR HEARTS OR ANY OF THEM OTHER GAMES! Oh sure it has a game app, but the games are basically on-line and run slow and are crap compared to what I'm use to. Thoughts on Win 8.1 UI tablet usage... (I've been using tablets since XP days.) Likes: (relative to Win7) Light weight (fast boot) doc-switch is nice. Picture password Don't like: Press & tap right-click NLA Those handy programmable (touch) Flicks became Pen-Flicks (now Pen only) Flicks not working in ie11 (weird, works in other apps fine. Firefox okay)

Password protect, yep, forced now, but also was in some version of 7. It is doable, but it's a pain, I don't remember it off hand. The halfway answer is go to Start, type login, or sign in and click the sign in options button. There is a way right there to disable the password for waking the PC, which makes the password only needed for restarts. That should eliminate at least a portion of that. Firefox sounds like a Firefox bug. Weird that 8 would affect that, I'll have to look at one of the machines around the office that has Firefox. I use ctrl-F for find on this page. It's also under the settings gear, file, find on this page. I think the file menu was visible in IE9 and earlier. Alt will also bring up that toolbar. I can do almost anything faster in 8 than on 7. On items that seem to be buried, just typing and searching for them is much faster than menu digging. But, I've been a big keyboard/hotkey user forever anyhow, so I do most anything faster than people using their mouse for those things. Solitaire and a few other games are free in the store, but yeah, not taking up space on PCs that don't use them. They may be slow because they are fancier, not because they are online, they download once you decide to install them. Maybe a couple of those things will help.

Island, does the digitizer pen not have a right click button? I can see that being pretty irritated since it's a forced delay to do the tap and hold thing.

Yup, that'll help. I'm sure there are ways to navigate around 8 that are better and faster, like that key ctrl-_____ stuff. Problem is, I ain't no 'puter wonk and it took me decades to get all learnt how to do stuff that now I need to re-learn. I'm too old for that. At least 7 looks like what I know.

I thought you said right-click was NLA? Maybe I misread it or something.
