Winter---cover a/c unit?

My wife and I are in a debate about whether or not to cover our central air unit for the winter.

We don't cover the unit at my office not do many others I see.

Is it beneficial to cover it? One would have to believe that they were designed to live outside for the duration of their lifespan.

What do you guys that live where it snows during the winter do with yours?

I don't cover mine. The only thing covering it would do is keep some leaves out. I clean my compressor unit every spring before I crank it up.

We cover our rented condo air cond. unit with plastic sheeting and duct tape. It prevents the snow from getting in. I tried online and various stores to find a fitted cover but was not successful. I don't know if it is really necessary but we are pretty fussy about looking after this kind of thing....

I cover mine, one came with a fitted cover and the other is a perfect fit for a plastic garbage can lid retained with bungee cords. It keeps the snow out of the innards....

I don't think they are strictly necessary, but it just keeps the crap from getting in...

No.

Critters and condensation.

If you are worried about crud wrap it in a screen material.

Keep the crap out but let it breath.

I cover mine. I have two units. I got very nice custom fitted breathable covers from a place called "The Cover Store". Included a nice storage bag for the covers summer when not in use. Made in USA.

I paid way too much for my HVAC to leave it exposed out in the snow.
