Another Impulse buy..back into a 911!
Well, bought a midyear targa tonight. rebuilt motor, tensioners, head studs, etc all done. One of my coworkers drove his car in tonight...I had helped him with some technical stuff about it in the past. He's a really senior guy at work...he asked if I wanted to buy it since "finding a new owner was like finding a new son in law"
For the price, I could not resist! never had a targa before...never had a midyear. As much as I like the Ferrari...there was a certain sense of joy I got from driving a 911 again. Pictures to follow. |
Congrats Mike! Living the good life!
|
thanks! living the SINGLE life! haha
|
Haha! I suppose it has its advantages!
|
Once you get that 911 cruising the streets you won´t be single for long. I hear the midyear targas are real cougar magnets. :D
|
Mike,
That is awesome! I am looking forward to the pictures. |
Woo hoo! I am a Targa fan. :)
Pictures! Please. Congratulations. So much fun! Let us live vicariously through you. |
Congrats! I really like the narrow body mid year cars, they are more subtle than the newer cars.
|
Ok...just got the car delivered from my coworker tonight.
I was curious about the color....it's painted slate grey metallic..which I knew wasn't a factory color in '77. Figured it got repainted at some point. Anyway, I checked the paint code...and sure enough, it's a pretty rare "paint to sample" that wasn't officially offered. It's Anthracite Metallic. I had an idea to paint it continental orange, put steelies on it, and then lower it. ...but something tells me to leave it the original rare color. what's the consensus here? some very bad cellphone pictures: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1384658089.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1384658101.jpg |
Congrats! Very excited for you.
Hard to tell the color due to the lighting, but in general I'd lean towards keeping the color original if it's in decent condition and something unusual/rare like a paint to sample. |
here's a picture of a 930 painted the same color.

OK, I like that one. ^^^^^^^
But I'm biased because it's a 930. |
Sweet. Looking forward to hearing/seeing more.
Someone once told me that Porsche owners do not pick the color, the color picks the owner. I say have a crap ton of fun in that color. Don't mess around with paint unless it really, really needs it. Spend your energy ( and $ ) on more advantageous tweaks and upgrades. Just sayin'. |
the paint is a 10 footer...little door dings, but nothing too bad. the interior is perfect (except for the front seats...the seams are split on both). I loved my 912 in slate grey...but it was non-metallic. the car was such a deal, and if it would have been hot pink, I still would have bought it.
it's already got SSI's...im thinking after fixing leaky valve cover gaskets, it's time for an M&K. then pretty much drive it. |
And you know the drill. Improve the things you touch every time it's driven. Gearshift knob and/or shifter, steering wheel, door handles, turn signal assembly, etc...
|
What's that big pool of oil under the car!
Joking (I know NOT funny). I like that color, have fun with the car :) |
you mean under the Ferrari in the garage? HAHA
|
You really need to start thinking about some external home illumination :)
Congrats on the 911. If it's anything like the 930 pictured it will look amazing! |
I vote keep the original color, it looks great on the 911.
|
^^ I second that vote.
|
If it's the same color as the 930..... I vote don't change it.
Nice car. |
Keep the original color. Paint to sample is a rare option and if original paint, adds to the value of the car. Also, take the seats to a good upholstery guy. They can fix the seam splits pretty easy and cost effective. Hows the dash? Love mid years.
|
Absolutely leave the paint alone. I think it looks great and as stated, it's a super-rare factory color. No-brainer there.
Great looking car! |
definitely going to keep it the stock color. question...would a '77 have solid black centers on the wheels, or would it have had the polished petals?
the dash is perfect...rest of interior is great. targa top has been rebuilt. the front seats are the only issue. |
In 1977, there was an option for either chrome trim or blacked-out trim, (sort of a transition time between all cars having chrome and all having black). I know that most '77s I've seen had silver Fuchs, (NOT polished from factory-Porsche never did that), can't say for sure on the black centers.
Is trim on car chrome/stainless or black? Is it original? Sometimes it had been changed to black by owner on those years to "update" the car a few years later. At any rate, they are all the same wheels and can be easily changed from silver to black and vice/versa... |
Just to clarify: the factory finish on Fuchs wheels in the '60s and '70s was an anodized finish covered with clear coat to protect the shine/color, not polished alloy. Polished Fuchs have always slightly rubbed me the wrong way because I think that the factory got it just right. Not as bad as chromed Fuchs, (and not irreversible or ruin the rim like chrome), just not quite right.
Same with polished lips. They are supposed to look like this, (my old SC with rims re-anodized and cleared): http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1384710201.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1384710213.jpg |
I feel like I'm back on the tech board for a minute there...lol.
|
he had the tensioners done in june of this year. whoever did it, didn't get the gaskets right, and it's weeping oil from the cam covers. (onto the headers, causing smoke).
the black part on the hood is plasti-dip. (removable bra...not a bad idea, I guess) here are a couple of more pictures from today: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1384737321.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1384737361.jpg |
Looks great. Congrats!
|
That's a really good looking car.
|
thanks guys! im pretty excited to have a 911 again.

Glancing at factory '77 brochures seems to show that Turbos had black-center Fuchs while non-Turbos had silver-spoke Fuchs or cookie-cutters.

I love your brushed targa bar. I wish mine had the chrome trim instead of black.

Yup.
|
I'm learning here so bear with me. So a '77 non-Turbo should have silver-spoke Fuchs or cookie-cutters and from '78 (to '83) it would be an SC and have 6 and 7 black-center Fuchs (or cookie-cutters)?
