Tired of Buying Mattresses

So we are on mattress #3 of the last few years. We had a Denver Mattress, then a Sealy, and now a off brand memory foam that we bought on a whim. All of them get lumpy after a year or so (king size), and the "firm" memory foam isn't so firm anymore. I sleep like hell and my back is killing me in the morning, so I need to do something. Neither myself or the wife is particularly big, so I don't think it's a case of fat people wearing out beds. And God knows it's not because of too much sex.. The bottom line question, who makes a good firm mattress for back pain that will actually LAST?

Before the naysayers start with pansy lace curtain and matching pillow case jokes, I would also like to know this.

We have an air mattress. I can dial up the firmness or make it softer with the push of a button. My wife and I love it. As far as I can tell it feels like a standard mattress. Air never gets lumpy. I think it is the Comfort Sleep brand.

My co-worker bought one and hated it.

Check out a Select comfort mattress. It costs a little more than a conventional mattress to begin with but after having one for the past ten years, I know that I will never buy anything else. Besides that, for what you have already spent on three other mattresses, you would have been money ahead.

The best thing about my Select Comfort was that broke down easily so I could put it on the curb with the rest of the garbage. I really hated the one I bought after ~6 months. It did not work for me at all. I know I'm in the minority on this. Most people love them.

I don't have any back serious back problems yet We use a Eclipes Chiropractic mattress It is a spring mattress with latex top layers. But they do all so sell memory foam ones too. They are made here in the US. You can see the products on sears .com or wayfair .com

Timely topic, as I'm having to sleep in the guest room because our pillow-top had me locked up for almost two weeks...steroid shot and week-long dose pack just to be able to walk.

We are in the market as well.

Could be your mattress or it could be you. I went though a similar problem about a year ago. Suddenly just having back aches and not sleeping so well. My wife was sleeping just fine. Friend suggested that perhaps I should start doing some exercises that built up my core. Kept it simple. Just started doing some sit ups and pushups in the evening. After about a month of the exercising the back pain went away. I still do the push ups and sit ups.

I've been doing yoga for over a year for just this reason...turns out the muscles you need to strengthen are the transverse abdominals (per the physical therapist I've been seeing also). Kinda hard muscle to target, at least for me, as I wind up using other abdominals to compensate. She described it as the muscle you use when walking into chilly water just as your "privates" are about the hit the water.

(not meaning to derail the thread, but since others mentioned back issues, I thought I'd share)

+1 on the Select Comfort. We've had one for more than five years now and find it to be just wonderful.

Sleep Science Latex from Costco is the only one that's kept its shape and firmness for us .. two twins side-by-side is how we made up our king size mattress.

To the OP, how much have you been paying for mattresses?

If you've been getting cheap mattresses, I think that could be the problem. Even good bands make cheap mattresses that don't last.

Mine have been under $1000, not dirt cheap but not real expensive either.

The Select Comfort style air bed is the only route we haven't tried, and I expected quite a few positive recommendations for them. I assume they don't degrade like a conventional mattress that will sag over time? What is the life expectancy of a quality air bed?

we have had the same problem. is was sleeping in another room at one time. one matress worked for her, but not me.

i spept on a couch my brother gave me for i would say at least 2 years. very comfortable but i wanted to sleep with her. oh, this is when we had the memory foam. hurt me and made me sweat like a whore in church.

she wanted one of those air beds. we finally broke down and dropped the coin. man thprice for and air bag and pump!!
its not the greatest thing but now i am in bed and she gets onthe couch in the middle of the night sometimes. not the one i slept on, that one is gone.

maybe someday.

oh, she has added all these extra things on top of the air bed to help her. just makes me sweat more and reduces the effect of having an air bed.

Almost 7 years on our Select Comfort mattress, and I won't buy any other kind of mattress in future. You can make your side any firmness you like, your wife can control her side independently. The air bladder seems very durable, the pump and controls ditto. The bed doesn't sag or leak over time, in my experience.

The new ones have the option of a memory foam layer over the air chamber. I hate memory foam but some like it.

They have a new option now, the dual-temp mattress pad that allows each person to control the temperature, e.g. if you like it cooler and your wife likes it warmer, it circulates cooled or heated air. I haven't tried that.

Well, I think about 10 yrs ago a corp bought out all mattress co's and since now they have a monopoly they do what they want and quality went in the poop bin.

When was the last time you turned over your mattress, can't do it anymore. They can be turned head to toe but that's all.

After doing much research in this subject the only conclusion is you have to spent some money for even a chance for a quality mattress and I am talking 3-5K.

I bought a Airloom mattress made in Cali about 3 yrs ago and on sale it was 3500.00 and I have to say its a very good sleep in the medium firm. No rolling into the center, with a 20 yr warranty, I can live with.

There is a Sweden Co. Hastings that has the most expensive mattress, lifetime guarantee for a 50K bill, alittle out of my budget range, they do have a cheaper one at 5-6K.

Mattress purchases are no longer buy for 500 bucks and be happy for 10-20 yrs, the bean counters have gotten to the industry and now expect a buck a night for a good mattress.

We stayed in a hotel and loved the mattress so we checked the label and tracked it down. We bought it from 'gasp' Costco about 4 yrs ago and it's the best sleep I have had in years.

It is a Sealy Posturpedic plush. $600

I used to wake up with a lot of back pain and strengthening my core muscles was the cure. No doctors and no pain pills.

I can sleep on (almost) anything but my wife has serious back problems.

I have considered the select comfort... I don't mind spending the money if it will help her... conversely money is tight and we can't afford to drop big coin on a mattress then find out it doesn't work.
