Iraq x2, Afghanistan. The days of ship to ship warfare are less and less hence this new one being more for littoral combat.

It says speed is 30kts.
isn't that a little slow for a destroyer?
Maybe that's just cruising speed. hopefully.
it'd be sad if a sub could outrun a destroyer.

That's a standard answer. You don't have a need to know.

I think it looks cool. Better than the WWII-leftover tin can (Allen M. Sumner-class) I served on for a while.

ah yes, the good old days of 16" shells, lobbing rounds between heavy weights like Ali and Fraiser boxers.

I bet it could do double that speed if they had retractable foils on her.

Doesn't the Navy have a long and storied history of publishing severely understated data regarding ship performance? I'd bet that this ship does some cool stuff that we'll never know about.

Yup, the ship I was on had a top speed of 24 knots, which is not bad for an 800 foot long box. I can tell you for a fact it would do better than 30 knots for 24 hours. I have it on fairly good authority that one of those attack subs can breach hard enough to get completely out of the water, which is pretty impressive if you think about it. I have seen one of those Harrier jump jets do stuff that they flat out are not supposed to be capable of doing.

It is sort of like in 1968 when they said a Mopar Hemi had 425 hp, or more recently when the SRT 4 Neon would dyno more power to the wheels than it was supposed to have at the crank.

That is a bad to the bone tin can, bet it is plenty tough to spot and is way faster than they will admit.

That's what they want you to think. That way the bad guys are not looking up and it can swoop down on them.

Is it just me, or does it look like they just missed it being a sub?

With captain Kirk at the helm it no doubt can do warp speed and has phasers!

It only makes sense to dumb down the performance figures of any military weapon (SR-71)

Ship speed.........

They will have to be at least as fast as a nuclear powered aircraft carrier! I believe that the carriers can break 30 knots in good seas.

It can go partially underwater if that helps.

The below from a link I provided earlier.

Phisical Psience ΦΨ - US NAVY - DDG 1000, Tumblehome Hull - Zumwalt Class Destroyer
Quote:
The forward gun mount on the DDG 1000's weather deck is nearly completely submerged (red arrow). The large curtain of water (blue line and arrow) being pitched upwards measuring ~20 feet wide, 6 feet deep and 30 feet in height......

The largest single crest to trough height of the simulated waves measuring approximately 28'-30'feet (~8.5-9.1 meters) or sea state [7].........

The waters in the Central Pacific Ocean in the winter easily reaching in excess of sea state [8], and on one occasion from Hawaii to Guam, estimating conditions to have been equivalent to sea state [9]. The top of the large AN/SPS-40 air search radar on our ~415' (126.5 m) vessel, with the hull situated in a trough, well below the crest of the tallest waves. In these situations, if otherwise mild weather conditions, with safety gear donned, still permitted outside on to the weather deck to service the weapons fire control radar on the O-4.5 level.
