Scamp Travel Trailers?

I really need an RV for the upcoming camping season. I have looked pretty hard at a truck with truck camper combo, but it is just too expensive to get in on this. It would be a lot easier and cheaper to buy a small trailer. At my current house I can store it too, so no monthly cost of storage. All I need is a shelter with propane heater that sleeps four. I do not like tent / pop up trailers and want as small and light as possible.

Scamp trailers look like a good option. No john / shower to worry about. What is the going rate for these? I specifically found this one, but it is the first one that I found for sale locally. Seems about 1k too much, from my uneducated perspective. What do you think? Good trailer? Good price?

Do you camp anywhere hot? That thing will be an oven in the sun with no ac.

Other than that they are cool little trailers. Good way to stay dry and not be sleeping on rocks.

Cold and rain is the concern. Summers, I usually am at the North Coast where it is nice and cool. Also, these do come with a/c on newer models, so I am sure if I'd ever do a hot trip, I could upgrade. Thanks!

I'd like one too, for week or weekend camping but bare bonz as they are I might not like it...Sure easy to tow.. Cool weather and campground with crappers a must...

Like I said, I just need it for shelter. It's still supposed to be a camping trip - cooking outside, sitting outside, hiking, fishing, hunting. Just not getting wet and cold. Not sitting in the trailer with a/c on and the generator humming, watching the game.

Last time you asked about this trailers were off the menu: What made you change your mind?

There are some really excellent trail trailers on the market, even some DIY kits that may fit the bill. The range of choices and tailoring to fit your needs is really excellent these days as more people who drive a perfectly capable SUV want to use it for it's intended purpose.

The Scamp is a great trailer but not made for much more than a fairly rough road.

I complete agree with the dry and warm issues, my ground tent days are over.

Cost. And finding some spots I can get into with this. I can probably cover 80% of my trips. For the remainder, I can sleep in the SUV to get out of the weather. And yes, my worries about traveling at 55 mph remain!

I have used the Moby trailer (I borrowed a friends, the road version) and it was great.

I know you want a four person trailer, but two in the pod and two in the tent (the kids) works for me!

There should a any number of this class of trailer coming on the market used.

Boy, that Scamp looks awfully small for a rainy weekend with 4 people rubbing knees. can you get an awning around 2 sides, that would cheaply increase the usable area on blistering hot, or rainy/cold days.

I'd just get an easy up to spread out a little. Generally we don't see much rain during the times I camp. But as you know, one good rain shower and all your stuff is wet when tent camping. Can really mess up your trip.


So guys, any input on that Scamp. Is $4k crazy money for it? They apparently are about $12-14k new, so I feel it is a $3k trailer tops.

That's awesome. I'd need more $$$ for that, even if it was available in the US. Also would really worry if it is still there when I come back from a hunt, it is so nice!

Get a better tent if that's the case, and learn how to set up for rain... I've spent a week in a tent where it rained daily, and all my stuff was dry...

Can I ask why you've discounted popups? That seems like the perfect solution to me. Light, easy to store and maneuver and sleeps 4 easy...

Camping in wind, those things will be a sail. They tend to leak and stink too.

Boler or Bigfoot campers would also meet your criteria. My family camped in a 13ft boler for may years (just three of us) it was very fun!!! Good luck on your search....
My ultimate camper would be one of the 4wd versions of the VW popup type!!!!

Why not a Westfalia? It sleeps 4 very comfortably. And it has a fridge, sink, and two-burner stove. And without a trailer, it's much more maneuverable. Plus, you can take it to the beach for the day. Or a picnic anywhere.

Yesterday, I took mine to Home Depot and put 4 sheets of plywood inside, along with 10 1x4x12' lengths of poplar. It all fit inside. Right now, it's loaded up with a bunch of cardboard to take to the dump.

Most useful car you will ever own.

I'd own a US van before buying a Westfalia. The older ones with the rear engine scare me big time as death traps. Had a college buddy get hurt bad in one of them in Spain. The upside of a trailer is that I can pull with the 4x4 SUV, park it on flat terrain and still go into the steeper territory with the 4x4.

The 13' trailer won't sleep four. It will sleep two and they are sharing a smallish bed.

I think I'd rather have a big, multi room, standing height, "family" tent than that 13' trailer. The larger ones have three "rooms". They take maybe 10 min to set up. Folding cots or air mattresses in the two side "rooms", a folding camp table and folding chairs in the center "room", and a two burner stove and cooler on another camp table outside. Some propane heaters are designed for in-tent use ("Mr Buddy"). This will be more spacious and comfortable than a 13' trailer, for two or more people. The setup time will be only a little longer than parking and leveling a trailer, and being able to drive normal speeds on the way to the location will save you more time than the extra setup.

Plus you don't have to store a trailer, won't be limited in where you can drive and camp, don't pay the gas mileage penalty of towing.

In the prior thread on pickup campers, I missed the requirement to sleep four. That rules out the low profile fold down models, I think.

Was it a micro, bay window or a vanagon? The vanagon westfalias are much safer. IMO My family daily driver is a 82 turbo diesel 1.9. We hit a deer with it at 40 mph and only broke the turn signal. A friend with a f350 hit a deer at 65 took out the grill, valance,
Radiator, water pump, and maybe the headlights. They are very safe and versatile
Vehicles just don't go 70+ mph. 62 is where it likes to cruise on the freeway.
