Take a homeless person and get him a job and a safe place to stay.

Most won't stay in a large shelter because they are unsafe and or the shelters won't allow them to abuse substances while there. So you would need to find him a place that will take him and is safe. Clean him up and help get him a job.

Keep him clean and sober for a period of 3 months.

Your reward: satisfaction you helped a fellow human being

Indeed - this is where the whole idea apart. If I show up anywhere as a mid-age guy, they are going to ask what I have done for the last 25 years. I tell them I have an engineering degree? If not, what do I tell them? That I just got out of prison after 25 years?

And FYI, ALL "reality" shows on TV are scripted / fake. Doing this for real would be way boring. Especially with the average Pelican - mid aged dorks that spend their time on OT (Including myself here).

Its not hard to get proof of education these days either... Give me a few minutes with a computer and I can submit a request to have a copy of my college transcript showing my degree mailed to any potential employer...

But working in the trades like I mentioned, you'd likely get paid in cash, and the proof is in the pudding. If you do good work they will trust that you know what you are talking about...

you usually have to pay for the transcripts - that means a credit card, which you do not have

there will also be some lag in the possible employer getting the info, so you need some bucks to cover those days (or weeks) & that means a different job for a while

Union carpenter/welder in his late 40's. Worked about 20 years as a mechanic before he got in the union.

Since he joined the union it's been a cycle of working and layoffs. The last three years it's mostly laid off.

House is foreclosed. Wife is divorcing him. He drinks to much. He's in terrible physical shape. He believes he should be making $35./ hour.

Do you feel ready to turn this guy around and make him a success?

That would be a show.

Is $35.00 an hour considered a lot where you are from?

If he could demonstrate good welding skills and knowledge and had a good work history? He would be able to make $35. / hour here.

His welding is sketchy at best and pretty much limited to carbon steel in Mig and stick. I got him a job offer at my employer a couple years ago. In our welding test he came up as entry level. He blew that job off for a 2 week gig with the Union. His carpentry skills are rudimentary. His auto mechanics knowledge is 20 years behind.

$35. would be quite a stretch for him outside the union, and the union appears to have stopped standing up for him. (it seems that the other guys he worked with were getting angry that he wasn't "keeping up").
