Anyone in Houston interested in Sunday range session?

Plan on going to the range in Katy/Bush Park on Sunday morning. They open at 8 and weather permitting I will be there near opening time. I am trying to get a new rifle dialed in. May take a hand gun that I have never shot if I can get my wife to go also.

Have you ever shot sporting clays there? I have always wanted to do it.

If you go to the range on Sunday, you are supposed to go in the afternoon. Events elsewhere will keep the morons away.

Do you reload? If not, wanna sell your brass?

Also, if not, you should. Commercial offerings in 8mm Mauser suck in this country, in case some dullard puts one in a Gewehr 88 rifle with a .318 bore.

If you look on Privi Partisan's web site, they list 2 different calibers, "8 x 57 IS" which is the CIP designation for the 8mm Mauser round, and "8mm Mauser" which is the SAMMI designation, with much lower pressure. The same bullets are ~2-300FPS slower in the "8mm Mauser" vs the "8 x 57 IS".

Privi's 175 gr "8mm Mauser" @ 2330 fps is fairly close to Remington's and Winchester's only offerings, 170 gr @ 2360fps. Federal's only option is even wimpier 170gr @ 2250 FPS.

Privi's 175 gr "8 x 57 IS" is 2540fps.

Hornady seems to be the only folks making "real" 8x57 ammo, with two options, a 195 hunting bullet and a 196 gr match, both @ 2500 FPS, which is pretty close to the original military load.

Even the pussified US loads are still enough to kill pretty much anything in the lower 48, but it irritates me.

Emcon,

Thanks for that. The domestic offerings are definitely low power, but when I am shooting 60-80 rounds at the range in an afternoon I don't want my shoulder to turn to mush.

Where are you buying your Privi? I am a big fan of the match cartridge that they make. Also, where do you get your S&B?

Sorry Hads for the hijack. I'll PM you my cell #.

I picked up a couple boxes at my local Cabela's, they carry the S&B as well, but I haven't tried it. The S&B is supposed to be good stuff, loaded to original military specs, 196gr @ 2591 fps.

My 8mm Mausers are both WW2 K98s, and I primarily shoot surplus through them, or handloads. Neither of my K98ks like the Privi stuff, so if I buy more it will be to get the brass.

The best price I remember seeing on Privi is from SGAmmo, in Oklahoma, but they are out of stock at the moment. They do have the Hornady Vintage Match in stock though. One state over for you, shipping shouldn't be all that bad. 8mm Mauser | SGAmmo.com

I was serious about buying your brass, by the way. Good cheap surplus 8mm ammo has pretty much dried up, and I can always use them.

That's a lot of damn ammunition to figure out if you can shoot or the gun is worthless.

Jebus, I don't think I've ever run through a box to sight one in. Inch high at a hundred, then leave it alone.

Matt,

What isn't in this picture are two other rifles in 8x57 Mauser. I wasn't shooting to sight in my rifle. I was shooting to hear the sound of freedom.

I don't golf so that's how I justify the expense. Plus, it's not really that expensive.

Does the gub need additional bore wear? I'm not anti, I love my spoons, but I'm not eager to chamber a round either. Golf is too expensive, I'm lucky to have two balls when I finish a round.

Yes. Takes a LOT of rounds to shoot out a bore.

Doesn't take much to warp a barrel.

Seems I was right, I went to the county range just after lunch, and there was only one other small group there and they left after about an hour. After that, I was the only one there.
