Looking for low sugar snacks - smoothie recipe anyone?

I really like Jamba Juice lite smoothies but even those have a ton of sugar. Thought maybe I can make my own so I bought some fresh frozen fruit and puréed them in the Magic Bullet. I didn't add any sugar and it tasted like it. Also it became basically a fruit slush. It was definitely missing something.

If you have a smoothie recipe, please share it. Non-dairy is best since I'm lactose intolerant. If I can't substitute rice milk, I'll just deal with the dairy. You might just want to stay away from me as milk does not do my body good.

My wife uses almond milk in her smoothies. Also throws in a bunch of spinach, which is healthy but doesn't change the flavor much. I'd say get used to that consistency unless you want to add yogurt.

My morning smoothie recipe is a banana, couple of scoops of plain jane no name vanilla yogurt, milk (i'm sure rice milk will work since the milk is more for consistency than anything else), a bit of ice.

The yogurt really helps take the edge off the bite / bitterness that comes from blended fruit.

Grape-Cherry Cooler
2 cups 100% grape juice from Concord grapes (bottle or frozen reconstituted)
2 Tbs. lemon juice
1 cup frozen dark sweet pitted cherries 1/2 tsp cinnamon
optional :1/2 cup plain non-fat yogurt

Process all in bender until smooth. Pour over crushed ice.
(note: lemon juice and yogurt help lower the "glycemic index" of grape juice, reducing its ability to spike blood sugar. Cinnamon boosts insulin activity to help process the sugar.

Serves: 4
per serving: 108 caloria, 0.5g protein, 0.4g fat, 27g carbs, 0.6 fiber, 2mg sodium.

Use some real honey instead of sugar. Local honey if you can find it.

I use 1% milk in mine, but you can substitute with a soy milk. Just fruit and milk and key to make it sweet is a ripe to over-ripe banana.

HTH. Don't drink that Jamba Juice stuff. Look up the nutritional information, it will make your eyes water.

He said no milk so I assume that means no yogurt.

I just like blended frozen fruit cut with some juice but that probably has a lot of sugar in it.

Strawberries, pineapple, almond milk, cashews. Add some spinach occasionally. For some reason adding bananas doesn't taste good to me.

By the way checkout Agave nectar it is a low glycemic sweetener sold at costco and at your local grocery store.

It's made from the blue agave plant.
1 tsp of agave sweetens like 1 1/4 tsp of sugar.

Great recipes! Can't wait to try them out. Heading for the grocery in the AM.

Jamba Juice's lite smoothies can have up to 41 g of sugar!!! No wonder I end up in a food coma after consuming even a small JJ smoothie.

I have a friend who thought a daily smoothie from Jamba Juice was healthy. 30 minutes later he'd be fighting off a nap. He had to quit smoothies altogether.

If your smoothie has a banana and a tablespoon of honey, it's nutrition label, if it had one, would probably be showing >30 grams of sugar. No, not refined sugar, so better on the glycemic index, but still a lot of sweetness.

my nutritionist told me to beware of fruit juices.

you cant go guzzling that stuff either. you don't want to overwhelm your body with fructose. she said eating a carrot is way different than drinking a glass of carrot juice. ever juice a carrot? you get a shot glass of juice. juice can give you too much of a good thing.

i water everything down. 1/5 juice..just taints the water. i do not drink orange juice anymore. i just eat one orange a day.

water is getting mundane tho.
