Hitting the Road....Hopefully Soon
My employer is expanding in several cities and I've decided I want to move to their new location in Atlanta.
I've been working with my boss since March to make this possible. He's hired two new people for me to cross-train to free me up so that I can post for jobs in Atlanta. The first guy is mostly trained and the second guy is starting Monday. It's been an interesting task to try to dump 12 years of experience on a fresh recruit. The first guy is a very quick study, so he has made the task pretty easy. When they are both trained I'm to manage their work for awhile and hopefully make a move. My boss has set specific expectations for me to meet. I've been talking with a manager in another area that is moving his operation to Atlanta and my boss has promised him that I will be ready middle of next year. I still would have to formally apply and interview, but I think I have a good shot. Heck, I heard about the job because a senior analyst on his team recommended that I apply. I've never made a move like this, and it has taken a long time to get things lined up to make it possible. I think the biggest stumbling block is that I found myself as the only guy who knows how to do a bunch of critical stuff, meaning that I can't move around easily.

I made that move almost six yrs. ago and it was the best thing I ever did. It was daunting and a ton of work to move three cars, a bike and everything else from VA to AZ. But it was so worth it.

Ordered to change everything.....across the country.....from one traffic jam into another.
I don't know what else to say except: Keep your snout above the water, and sniff the air occasionally. You are swimming mammal. Not fish. Last edited by john70t; 11-26-2013 at 06:15 PM.. |

Hope it comes through - you've been needing to get out of IL for a while... GA is a place I'd consider myself. All the best!

Which highway is it closest to? 75, 400 or 85? I have been to some really nice homes & neighborhoods north of the 285 loop.

Well, I found out that I didn't get the job back in December. It was a stretch for me to get it, as I only had about half of the skills they were looking for. (I'd have to learn the other half on the job.) They hired a guy with 20 years experience doing exactly that job, so it was pretty much no contest for me.
I went down to Atlanta for Christmas. I checked out the new facility. It is near the intersection of 400 and I285. Having a real commute will be an adjustment for me. I posted for another job at that facility. It is a different position in a different department, but the team lead for that team has been begging me to apply for over a year. I am 100% sure that I can hit the ground running on this job. We'll see how this one goes.

Well, not quite..........
The Atlanta area has tons of great restaurants, live theater, every kind of sports and recreation that doesn't involve snow, lots of great people and, in most areas, reasonable living costs. You will be above the gnat line (good thing) but will have quite reasonable weather for the most part. And, while I have friends that live in Illinois, they all seem to envy what we have here in Georgia! Don't knock it if you haven't tried it! If nothing else, Porsche is building their new NA headquarters in Atlanta near the airport, on the site of the old Ford auto plant. The city has already named the road leading to the site "Porsche Ave.".
