ok apple fans, how do i update?

I have an iPhone 4, running the original iOS 6 for it.

Obviously need to update for the SSL bug (darn it the browser is pretty much the only app I use). Turned on my one windows machine, just finished backing up/synching ... but I only have 600mb free and the Apple updater says I need 3.7gb free in order to install a 1.1gb update.

Only things on my phone I really care about are my mp3 files (not stored in Music, but thru a file manager app so I can actually manage my music from my Linux boxes) and photos (in the camera roll), and my contact list.

Do I need to just wipe the phone, install the update, and then restore the media/contacts?

Or should I take this opportunity to kiss apple goodby and go get an Android based phone (I have an upgrade pending w/ AT&T) so I have more control over my device?

You can plug into iTunes and do the update there. The download goes to your computer and it updates the phone for you.

Had to update iTunes on the computer first, and still don't have enough free space to apply update.

Making second backup of music, photos and contacts now, will wipe and do update, then restore data.

And, will start shopping for new Android based phone...

No need to change phones to gain more control

That's what the jailbreaking community is all about.

Android isn't really any better. In fact I know several people that have had issues with adware/malware/pornware ending up on their android-based phones. Sometimes being completely "open" with no oversight is a bad thing...

I echo the above - jailbreaking gives you the control but you can still take advantage of Apple's (excellent) App Store which is kept on a tight leash against such things creeping in. Of course once jailbroken you can then install non-apple-sanctioned (Cydia) apps too but then you're in the same boat with all the android guys - you do at so at your own peril and should be careful about what / whose software you d/l and whether or not you trust it to not have nefarious stuff buried in it.

I don't think the bug is in 6, just in 7. Only a factor if you are on a public network, not a home wifi or private wifi.
Conspiracy theory it was put in for NSA access.

I'm running into memory management issues on mine as well. I think the thing to do is kill a playlist or de-install some apps in the iTunes interface, sync, do your update and then reinstall the stuff you want. Next time, I'll go for the 32GB iPhone.

Only apps I have are the factory installed ones that I never use, and "Files" which allows me to upload files via web browser from any machine and it has built in media players. Since I cant manage the "Music" utility from my Linux boxes, this appears to be the best way for me to manage music on the phone.

We'll see just how mad I get after update is applied ... may end up with an Android phone, may end up going back to my super basic (non-smart but 3 week battery life) phone-only phone and get a stand alone MP3 player, etc.

This, and inertia, are the only thing keeping me with Apple. In the past I liked Apple stuff because it just worked. But recently I've had a rash of issues with iPhones and kids' iPods, including some iOS changes that are just infuriating. I have enough stuff to tinker with, my phone isn't part of that list.

I agree with this. The utter simplicity of Apple started to erode with the introduction of OSX. It infuriates me that an iOS update always tells me 'there are unpurchased items on your iPhone that will not be transferred or backed up.' I've written to Tim Cook to say, WTF, but no response. I miss Steve. I always got a response from him.

I have a big music collection, but only let my kids download certain songs for obvious reasons. Random inappropriate songs have appeared on their iPods and you can't delete the effing things. They are on the iPod but the iPod thinks they are in the cloud, so you have to download the song to delete it, which often times makes a new one pop up. It's like whack a mole. You also have to delete each song to delete an album, assuming that it actually lets you delete the songs. This is with show all music turned off, though it seems to turn back on with each update.

Update done, crap back on phone where it belongs. Still not a fan, have to go thru and double check all my settings to make sure bluetooth, locations, etc. are all turned off (noticed at least BT was on, I don't have any BT devices)

Yup, another annoyance. Would it be that hard to back up your phone settings as part of the update process? It's a real PITA with multiple devices.

I didn't have to plug into my laptop, just updated it via wifi at home. I so regret getting iOS7, but I'm used to it now and probably won't switch, since I'm about to go with a prepaid plan that doesn't give me a new phone.

Surviving the upgrade so far. Not exactly happy with it, but I'll survive.

Is there a way to turn off the fancy transitions? On the 4 (not 4s) they are appearing to be slow or laggy.
