Another kid suffering from affluenza. My wife was talking about this last night. Sounds like a parenting issue that should have been worked on starting about 16 years ago though peers can have a significant influence on some kids.

Hey it's New Jersey. Imagine that an attorney is at the root of the issue. It's a circus here.

Waste of court time. Or it should be. If she is 18 then she can be cut off from parental support. Especially if she moved out.

It would be interesting to here her opinion on how old she will be before they don't have to support her?

Hmm,

18?

Legally she is on her own.

The outstanding school bill, depending on the timing they may /should be on the hook for it.

The college fund, bit of a gray area. I have funds for my kids. We are stewards of the accounts and set up by my guy so that if my kids go off the reservation they can't just go grab the cash the day they turn 18.

May be a parenting issue, may not.

She's an honors student at a private school. Would indicate she has her poo together but that's no guarantee.

Had a friend whose older brother was on the honor roll at a prestigious parochial school.

The guy was horribly intelligent but also a really bad seed. There was something seriously short circuited upstairs. He was a one person crime wave. Think he's still in jail.

Rest of the kids all turned out fine.

Still me thinks there is more to the story from both sides.

According to a couple articles she has been suspended from that school on two occasions. I don't recall what for , but is sounds like she can be pretty verbally abusive.

Hmm...now living with the family of her best riend--whose father happens to be an attorney and who is presenting/representing the daughter in this case.

This entitlement belief is waaay out of hand. The future is going to be real bleak for alot of these tools.

Parents should be liable for highschool tuition. Nothing else. College fund is the parents money they were going to use for her college. They can change their mind.

One of my buddies in high school was told when he turned 17 that he had one year left at home. The day he turned 18 his parents cut him off from all financial support and told him to move out. He was welcome to come over for Sunday dinner with the family or to stop by and say hello but he was no longer welcome to live there.

He is still close to his parents. For some reason he seems very independent.

My kids will be quasi-cut off when they hit 18. They have been informed that if they're going to college locally, they're free to stay at home at no cost to them; if they join the military--good for you; if they go away for school, we'll help out, but they will share some of the burden; and if they choose to not go to school and just work, they will pay me rent. NOBODY will be mooching off me as adults. My oldest step-son is 2 years away, and nowhere near prepared for real life. My 13-year-old daughter is already putting things in place (grades, right extra-curricular activities to help with scholarship awards, putting money aside) to make sure she's ready for successful life beyond my umbrella.

Oh, and if this girl "wins," the courts are setting a huge (in my opinion, bad) precedent.

I agree but that's an emotional call for me, and it does not consider setting a legal precedent.

About the only angle I could think of is source of the college funds. If its all the parents money, the court will tell her to go pound sand. But if grandparents or other family members contributed to the fund, it could get murky.

The real story here is the dirt bag lawyer who is using an 18 year old girl to make money. Vermin.

This. It shouldn't make it past the first hearing. As an adult her parents are in no way required to support her.

My parents told me that I had to live by their rules if I lived under their roof, so I moved out and supported myself after I was done with high school. It's called being an independent adult, and a lesson that more kids need to learn in today's society.

We have 529 plans for each of our three kids, but I believe they are in our name with the kids listed as beneficiaries. We determine how the money is spent, though we are penalized if it doesn't go to post-secondary education expenses.

Sheet. My mommy kicked me out when I was 16. Her new BF didnt want to deal with a kid. Bounced around until I turned 17, dropped out of HS and joined the Navy. Never felt sorry for myself, or that anybody owed me. It was just the way it was and I had to deal with it.

If things were different then, things would be different now. Glad it happened the way it did because I LOVE my life now.
