"Justified shooting" du jour

74 year old guy reaches for his cane. Cop shoots him. Department defends cop.

South Carolina cop shoots 70-year-old military veteran who was reaching for his walking cane | FreakOutNation

The deal is this: in most of these shootings the justification is that cops were 'following their training.' Here's my question: why is that working now when it didn't work at Nuremberg?

And just in the last few weeks there were a couple more killing-the-family-dog-in-front-of-the-kids "justified shootings."

Yes, but this does not indicate there is a gun problem in the USA.

Maybe there is a gun attitude problem in the USA: Shoot first, ask questions later.

I'll bet the officer demanded the driver to exit the vehicle...

Barney there needs to turn in his badge. Fortunately, he isn't a very good shot, and it looks like the old man will live.

Utterly clueless commentary...

An old guy who poses no threat getting shot by a cop is not the fault of a "gun attitude problem", it's a "cop attitude problem".

Guns aren't the problem. Idiots with sloppy training, itchy trigger fingers and big egos (and protection from any misdeeds by unions) with guns are the problem.

Yup, from someone that constantly tries to twist events to suit his agenda.

This is about the cops and their propensity to use deadly force on non-threats. So yeah, it's also about the guns. Guns are consequence amplifying tools.

Had the cop pulled out a taser, the potential for killing that guy would have been reduced.

Yay. He didn't die. The 17 year-old kid who answered the door with his Wii controller in his hand wasn't slo lucky.

Maybe not in this situation but, guns in this country are a problem. My opinion only.

I ask myself, what would happen to me if I mistakenly shot and killed someone?
Whatever my punishment would be should also apply to the cop.

I'd most likely get charged with 2nd degree murder for doing that and so should he.
It really is that simple.

Public gun ownership has nothing to do with it, piss-poor cops who see the general public as the enemy ARE the problem.

Given that police officers have or are supposed to have training on the use of deadly force I think maybe the punishment for this sort of action should be even higher than if you or I made the same mistake. The police officer should not only know better but has been trained to handle the situation correctly.

A "gun attitude" is one that includes target acquisition and fire discipline. This cop "seems" to lack that attribute.

Yeah, like some type of reckless endangerment or even manslaughter?? (that is one for the Legal folks to explain.)

Yup. They have a damn hard and thankless job, and I respect the hell out of them for doing it. But as the saying goes, with great power comes great responsibility.

That was my motivation for the thread: they routinely seem to skate on charges whether they shoot or beat someone to death. And I don't like it.

that's because the supposedly 'good one's'...
look the other way or cover for the bad ones...
so respect would have to be earned..
not by intimidation or fear of death..

these days when your calling a cop..
best you be prepared to die for something...
or face trumped up charges..
