It was exciting to watch Hamilton and Rosberg race each other. It kinda looks like F1 is two races this year. One up front between the two Mercedes teamates and then everybody else quite a ways back.
There was a video camera shot that looked down a long straight where Hamilton and Rosberg were coming right towards the camera position braking and turning into a right turn corner at the end of the straight and everyone else was just coming on to the straight wayyyy back in the distance. I think the third place car was around 8 seconds behind the Mercedes at the time. Mercedes has to be proud of their drivers and the engine they made this year. FWIW, I read on the Skysports F1 website that part of the reason it's so good is Mercedes designed the turbocharger they use so the exhaust turbine housing is at one end of the V6 engine with the shaft, bearing housing, and it's electric motor/generator or "electrical power unit" in the middle of the V of the engine block and the compressor housing is out on the other end of the block. That way with the two housings farther apart and on opposite ends of the engine there is less heat transfer from the extremely hot exhaust turbine housing to the cooler running compresser housing and that lets them run smaller intercooler(s) which makes the car more aerodynamic and faster. The article went on to say Mercedes has had two years to design their new car and chassis around their new V6 motor and the Mercedes motor customer teams didn't take delivery of the new motor until February of this year so they've had less time to develop their cars around it. |
