More bad news for GM...Halts Chevy Cruze sales

GM halts some Chevy Cruze sales - Mar. 28, 2014

No reason given...I'm sure it's not good news considering it's their best selling car right now.

They can just get another few billion of bailout money and keep on going.

How many billion did the taxpayers get shafted on last time?

I'm sure glad MY MONEY went to save a company that covered up a KNOWN issue which killed at least 12 and potentially dozens more. Money well spent right there! Even if they started building the best cars on the market (not even close), they won't get my money. There's a reason why they went bankrupt once, their issues go far deeper than can be fixed by a govt handout.

The timing of this whole thing stinks. So where was the NTSB when the Federal government owned the damn company? Seems to me a blind eye was turned here.

The Australians are going to stop manufacturing all their GM (Holden) cars too in a few years. There must be some serious mismanagement going on as the good loyal Aussies are still queuing up to buy them.

It's disgusting. I thought along similar lines as the story unfolded. Still can't believe that human life often enters into a bean counter equation when a defect begins to reveal itself; "how much to recall/rework, vs. how much to just let it go and deal with settlements". "Oh the humanity...the shareholders...the stock price...the bottom line..." I know this is nothing new and not a practice limited to GM.

Toyota went thru the same thing a few years back, hauled before Congress, etc. They're doing OK. IIRC they get gobs of money from the Japanese govt for R&D.

I don't recall the part where Toyota covered it up for a decade. Or declared bankruptcy and was bailed out by the US taxpayers.

You are right but the similarity is that out of millions upon millions of cars a handful had problems. It appears GM redesigned the ignition switch more than once since 2001 and when tested it worked properly. Then variations in consumer use that exceeded what is possible to test for uncovered a persistent problem. Toyota had the same issue IIRC a computer glitch that despite extensive testing could not be reproduced but in the real world occurred a few times resulting in disaster.

No doubt GM could have handled it better but the story is not as simple as some media reports suggest. I am not sure about calling this an intentional cover up as while GM did screw up along the way they did make several attempts to address the issue. Unfortunately some of those attempts were pretty poor.

It brings up an interesting point about safety devices... Driving itself is inherently dangerous. Two drivers collide and both die, one car with an airbag that does not deploy and the other car without an airbag. We all blame the carmaker as responsible for the death of the guy in the car with a malfunctioning airbag but not for the guy whose car did not have an airbag.... Hmm.

They knew that there was an issue, they knew that people had died from it, they eventually redesigned the part for new models. But they did NOTHING for thousands of cars that were already built. No letter to customers, no recall, nothing. They only went public because of the NTSB investigation. That is where they royally screwed up.

With the Govt's sale of the last shares of GM, anyone that actually has a job and pays taxes was left with about a hole of 15 Billion dollars(spread out amongst about 150 million working Americans)

Yes...a company who produced planned obsolescence along with some of the worst excuses on 4-wheels did not deserve to a single dime of taxpayers money to bail them out.

Capitalism is sink or swim...and if your product/service is so junky, then eventually that entity simply dies...and the customer simply goes to somewhere else which WILL provide that expected level of goods/service. GM thankfully isn't the only game in town.

SEARS in California several years ago was about to be thrown out of CA for doing such unscrupulous repairs on cars at it's automotive service centers. But by lobbying lawmakers, they duped them into staying because SEARS was such a good corporate citizen by paying it's taxes/jobs held, etc. Don't lawmakers with even an average level of intelligence know people can actually take their business to a reputable place, and let SEARS just die? So like with GM, Sears is allowed to do business as a disservice to the American consumer in the interest of 'commerce'. Let Russia support and subsidize bad business, not here in a free-enterprise system.

No sensationalism here.
One would think by the headline that the whole line had ground to a halt.

"The order applies to about 20,000 Cruzes in total. "
So, the 1.4 litre turbo has a recall.
Here's the reason:
"The Problem: The issue stems from “an interconnecting bar on the half shaft on some Cruzes “may not meet GM specification and could fracture and separate,” according to GM. If that happens while driving, the vehicle would lose power to the wheels and coast to a stop — but steering and braking control can still be maintained."
