Am I a bad person?

So we were at String Fling tonight. 5th-12th grade orchestras all playing.

A woman is sitting on the steps in the aisle of the bleachers with her 2-3 yr old son who is acting his age and being a bit rambunctious.

The boy is bouncing around and jumps up smashing his head on the metal handrail. Sitting 3 feet away you could feel the concussive shockwave come off the handrail.

The boy sat down and you could see the look of confusion and range of emotions wash over his face, "WTF was that? I think I just hit my head. It hurts, really bad. Seriously, it hurts. But Mom is not reacting. Am I imagining this? It really f'ng hurts. Should I cry? Not sure. I feel like I should but Mom seems unfazed. Mom, mom, look at me mom. Maybe she did not see it happen? How could she not? The damn hand rail rung like a church bell at Sunday Mass. ****kkkk this hurts. I think I'm gonna cry. Yeah, definitely need to cry cause son of a ***** this hurts. OK, here we go. In 3,2,1 waaaaAAAAHHHHHH"

I felt bad but watching the internal thought process reflected in his facial expressions was hysterical.

Am I a bad person because I laughed inside?

love the play by play of what was going on in the kid's head.

Being a boy is priceless, be glad and smile when stuff like this happens.

A well told story. Boys will be boys. Interesting that the mother ignored the boy. Serious damage could have been caused to the head(internal bleeding). Perhaps the mother was used to the boy doing this so carried on like it was normal. ie. brain damaged. G.

I believe that's called being a boy. My 3 year old is particularly good at it, though sometimes he needs to learn the same lesson multiple times before it sticks. He may not be too bright.....

If there is something I haved learned from being a parent, is that if you over-react to a situation, the kid is gaurenteed to cry, bawl, and make a very embarassing scene. Several times, raising our kids, my wife and I witnessed them potentially hurting themselves by running into something, falling down, or stubbing a toe, but we didn't say anything or make a move to comfort them. By not making a fuss over them, they would look up at us to see our reaction, and then go about playing......this does not work with Grandparents however.

I regularly stifle a laugh and then ask my kids if they are okay after they learn from doing something really dumb. "Wow buddy, you ALMOST made it. You okay?"

Having been to those events it is physical torture. You can't leave early.

When did this happen in the period of time when you were imagining what all the women looked like naked in your field of view?

I was waiting in line outdoors at a airport and there had been a recent light rain... the chrome railing was, of course, covered with droplets. A few people in front of me was a lady and he 3 to 5 year old son... he started licking the rain drops off the railing... I tried to get the ladies attention but we were getting close to security so the mom was digging though her purse and getting her stuff together... I looked around hoping someone else would notice and bring her attention to it... nope... this went on for what seemed to be minute then finally mom checked the kid and caught him in mid lick. Hate to admit I was chuckling a little bit.

For boys, especially, letting them deal with pain is part of the growth process. I try to teach my son to be "tough," while his mother babies his wounds (it's her nature). My son's seven, so typically it's just watching him fall and then telling him to brush it off. And he really is a tough SOB...

But don't get me wrong; he's my kid and when he does get hurt, it hurts me to see it. One time, I had a hard time not "reacting." I have an exterior door that goes to my garage and has a decent step-down into the garage (about a foot). As we were exiting the garage one morning, he decided to jump out instead of stepping out. He mis-timed the jump and caught the edge of the concrete step right across his shins (ouch #1) and then momentum carried him forward straight to the sidewalk--face first (ouch #2). First instinct was to rush to his aid, but I held off for a second...he looks up at me, gets up and I can see him fighting back the urge to cry. I asked him if he was OK, and he responded, "Yeah...that one hurt a bit, though." I lauged then; man, I love that kid.

Yep if the grandparents take the kids for a swim, there is more chance of the kids drowning. Especially if the grandparents are really old. There is a fine line though.
