Anyone here build their own smokehouse?
I'm thinking of building my own smokehouse. I have a small smoker that does a great job, but I would like to build a smokehouse. Looking for ideas...

Just how much meat do you really need to smoke?

We made one out of an old dead refrigerator. Rip all the plastic out of it and put a small hot plate type burner on the bottom. Cut a vent in the top. Of course we did that long ago and fridges were different back then.

Smoke houses are usually for cold-smoking. Meaning the meat is not cooked in the process. Temps stay under 100F. The meat is usually cured (brine) like a proscutto ham or salmon or it is boiled, like a liverwurst.
I have built it out of the old freezer (as stated above) and out of a large wooden shipping box. Both worked great. Since I moved a couple times, I just move the heater element and power cord. I can make a cold smoker quickly out of any box, including cardboard. I think you could even use your car. Crack the windows slightly and off you go! G |

My niece took an old 8x8 shed (you know, the ones you can buy on the side of the road) and an old smoker, put the smoker a few feet from the shed and used double walled vent pipe like you use in a gas heater for your house and connected the smoker to the shed with a the vent piping. Her and her husband are big time hunters and do quite a bit of jerky, sausage, turkeys etc...
