How is it that you have the time to post here so often?
I have over 5800 posts in 11 years and that's too many. I work for a living as do most of you. There are some with 5 digit posts who are supposedly business owners or executives. I don't know anyone in management who has that kind of idle time on their hands. Heck, I work 12 - 16 days regularly and I'm an individual contributor! If I had so much free time during the work day that I can peruse the internet, I'd be worried that I'm under utilized.

I have a little over 3000 posts in 12 years. I usually just can't think of anything clever enough to be worth posting. Like right now. I think I'll go to bed now.

2.5 posts a day for me translate to maybe 1/2 hour?
I type >70 WPM and have no TV. Coming on Pelican is a way to unwind in the PM. I don't think I have posted much in the daytime recently - unless between jobs. The average American watches 4h of TV a day? I definitely don't have time for that. ![]() G |

I had around 500 posts in one year. First year of 911 ownership so I need lots of info. I work in a VERY casual environment where internet surfing and game play is encouraged. I read pelican while my queries are running or while I wait for other processes to happen. Pretty conmon with a lot of west coast tech jobs...

Are you assuming that everyone is posting during the work day? It's 11:30 pm here in CA and I am definitely not at work. I did post one time earlier today and I was sitting at my desk.

I'm neurotic. Wish I was kidding. I'm not on PPOT all day. I'm on 20 times a day for 30 seconds a pop. From an ad revenue angle, I am Waynes dream.

I don't buy it. A friend of mine is an engineer at the lazy b and he has mentioned more than once how locked down the internet is at Boeing. Smart phones have all but made that a non issue though.

I was like Peter (back in the day - when I had a respectable job), I'd wait for a help desk call to come in and it was a case of "I'm on the computer, I must be working."

If you are going to surf the net, Pelican is the place to be. I am just wondering how you guys get away with it. My employer owns my laptop, air card, iPhone, mobile minutes and data time. My job is not unlike that of an attorney where I have to track billable time.

Nothing to get away with. I have to get work done, not bill hours. Since I'm often answering work emails after midnight, I don't feel guilty or "under utilized." If anything, I need a serious vacation as I'm maxed out on days and end up waking up at 3am worrying about funding, etc...

It's been like that for the past 8 years. I work from home so I do pretty much as I like but if I goof off I get behind very quickly.

It depends on how you measure productivity.
If it's simply how busy you are, then you're a worker bee. Nothing wrong with that, the world runs on worker bees. But the higher you go up in a corporation the less it depends on being busy as it does in producing results. I've known people who were so busy they didn't notice their business was failing until it was too late. They couldn't find the time to step back, take a deep breath and study the big picture because they were simply too busy. People like that, althuogh very hard working, are bad for a company. There are times when a member of the leadership team spends hours or days contemplating a problem and how to resolve it. The decision could save the company hundreds of thousands, or cost it twice that much if they make a bonehead call. The ultimate solution may be influenced by several hours of web surfing, which could be called investigating. Maybe they have a presentation to make to the corporate leadership team and are running scenarios through their head for half a day. To the outside it would appear as daydreaming. Maybe they have 4 or 5 of those types of decisions pending and are jugling them. Some of them may be nothing more than problem solvers and due to their extensive knowledge and experience are simply there just in case something goes wrong, they'll know how to handle it quickly before it gets out of hand and costs millions. maybe they'll only really do a few things a week, but those things are huge in impact. They may be sitting there on monday morning thinking "I only have to do 3 or 4 things this week, but any one of them could cost me my career if I blow it or get me an extra 5 figures on a bonus if I get it right. Are they busy during that time? Hardly. Are they working? It may not look like it even though their average work day is 13 hours long. Lets just say that sometimes they long for the good old days when life was easy and all they had to do was stay busy. Or maybe they're just so good they can spend a half hour a day screwing off and get away with it. Last edited by sammyg2; 04-19-2014 at 01:50 AM.. |

I am normally here between 11-2am when I am half asleep. I work best after 10pm, so when I am thinking about something, or get tire of screwing around looking at drawings and what not, I go here to see what's cooking. There seem to be always something interesting. During the day, I am not usually here unless I am waiting for something.

And some of us feel blessed if we can get more than 4 hours sleep.
I've been running on a two or three average for the past week. Shut up, dont tell him that. I can tell him anything I want to, you don't tell me what to do. Oh yeah, what happens when the council on foreign affairs hears about this? you wouldn't. OK, then I'll tell the bilderberg. You better not, they're still steaming about what MRM said. No kidding, they were pissed. I haven't heard from him lately. You don't suppose ... |

It's very efficient way to get in touch with what real, like minded people think of the world. I used to spend 1/2 an hour at the coffee shop in the morning (plus 1/2 and hour travel, plus gas) and an hour at the Tavern after work (plus 1/2 and hour travel, plus gas, plus gin). Now I can check in with my "friends" anytime I need to take a break from work. No travel, no gas, no - well, sometimes gin is involved.
I "get away with it" because I am my employer (I own the corporation that writes my paycheck), so I don't have hours to keep, just work to do. My boss approves of anything I want to do. ![]()
