Who picks up hitchhikers?

So I'm driving home from work today-traffic is at a standstill. A woman with grocery bags and a gas container is trying to hitch a ride- the old man in front of me won't let her in. " what the heck , get in". Big mistake... She was f*### ing nuts! .. Rambling on about her heroin addicted son , the evil medical industry, her inability to lose weight, evil Obama ...looney tunes. Soon found out the reason for the traffic congestion-her heroin addicted son is passed out at the next intersection in her car -out of gas. I manage to get the crazy biatch out of my car... She spills gasoline on the passenger floor on the way out... Geeez .. Should have listened to my mother, " never pick up hitchhikers".

I've picked up a few over the years. Usually after seeing a car stranded on the side of the road and the owner(?) walking for help.

After your story I should rethink the idea...

There's usually a good reason why YOU are riding and THEY are walking.

Once... Stopped for a stranded vehicle and after a few minutes trying to get it started, I offered her a ride...didn't hurt that she was really cute!

In my youth, I used to live near downtown Detroit. One day I was getting gas, and a woman with 3 kids in tow came up to me, and asked how far it was to a particular address. It was a good 3 miles away. She had to go there to get a check of some kind.

It was about 90+ degrees, and she was wearing worn out flat shoes. The kids looked tired and she had a toddler in a stroller. She asked me for a ride, and I said sure. Put the stroller in the back, the kids piled in, and off we went.

She saw it was a long way out when we got there, and she offered me gas money and thanked me up and down, which I of course refused.

I have always considered the opportunity to help that woman a gift. I was a young, angry, drugged up jerk. And that experience helped me. Woke me up a bit.

Things are different today - you always have in the back of your mind to help people out who are down and out but most take advantage. I will always stop to help someone if I feel there is the need.

Like if someone is walking back to their car with a gas can, or someone with a flat tire - especially if its an older person.

I guess you got to pick and choose today because you just don't know what the outcome could be.

I had a guy on crutches approach me as I was getting into my car. He asked for a ride that was just a mile or so away in the direction I was going. The size of his legs (small) and the size of his arms well developed) made me think he was a real disabled person. I took him and he wanted to be dropped at a church for a meeting. It was fine and I felt OK about it all.

Twenty-five years ago I stopped to help a hottie with a broke down car on the side of the road. End of this month we'll celebrate our twenty year anniversary.

I'll stop for an apparent stranded motorist, and I'll stay in my car and offer to call help if they seem sketchy. Hitchhikers? Nope. -J

In the bed of the truck, sure. Daylight public drop points only.

Damsel in distress isn't quite a hitch hiker I would argue.

Back in the early 70's, my Grandpa used to pull over for the, "right" Hippy Chick, usually when we were traveling on HWY 70 in the Feather River Canyon ( Northern Calif ). He had a GMC pickup and I'd have to scoot over to the middle as she sat next to me. He always got a kick outta doing that.

I hitch hikes across the Sierras after high school with my bicycle racing buddy camping along the way. No one would pick up us near the cities. As soon as we walked toward the mountains (talk about long fooking walks with a 60lbs backpack in that summer heat in the rolling foothills? I was young, dumb, and in shape from riding and racing, so no pain was felt). An old guy picked us up in his pick up truck and drove up up to a small town into the hills. He show up the way to the last food and supply stop before we were in deep and long ass walk to the next little town. People would pick us up in their dirty pick ups and take up and drop us off a certain direction. Evey since, I would return the favor and only pick up people who seem decent deep into the mountains. This was in the late 80s. Now, hell no. I did pick up a stranded gardener with a gas can sitting on the side of the road next to his gardening truck last summer when it was about 105 out. Seem like he's put in a very hard day of work. Drove him to gas station and drove him back with him in the back of my truck. He didn't speak a word of English, but he appreciated the ride. This was my good deed for the year. I don't think I would picking up anyone anytime soon.

I thumbed it all over Germany many times and Poland and Ukraine once. Amazing adventures, but I never could bring myself to pick one up.
