Apparently it does all sorts of weird things and makes disconcerting noises during warm-up.

As far as I understand it, it's a basically sound design which was then burdened with arcane emission control system.

(I have a 2004 Golf 1.6 (gasoline) which makes hoovering sound for 30 seconds during cold start...apparently there is a electrically driven air pump which helps lighten up the catalyst)
