Alien Life Thread #1,238,037...
This is a very cool article and actually may help to explain various positions on an exhaustive debate...

Good article - frankly the subject is not discussed enough. As a civilization we revel in our specialness but don't consider there may be others out there. "That's just conspiracy theory".
It is almost as though discussing the possibility of another intelligent species in the vastness of space is taboo. Link...

That was a very interesting read, thanks.
Maybe the great filter is that there was no giant asteroid that set off a chain of events as here on this planet. |

Well we do know there was a cataclysmic event so one has to wonder where dinosaurs might have ended up had this not happened.

seems like the only reason humans advanced so was because of strife. The dinos had it pretty good up until the Asteroid or global warming or global cooling or a volcano or Aliens used them as practice to hunt...either way, humans did well because they had to. I think dolphins are just as smart but they don't need to manipulate their environs. Food is as close as fast as you can swim for it...

Most likely the physics of the universe does not allow warp drive, worm hole like, or other FTL travel. Since relativistic travel is extraordinarily expensive from a mass/energy perspective and probably universally lethal to biological entities, we would not expect any live visitors. Even robotic probes would suffer the inevitable effects of entropy over the necessary transit times.

You put a fish in a pond and it will only grow so big. The universe is a pretty darn big pond. I'm thinking that if given the right set of circumstances there is a very good possibility that an alien life form won't need a planet and won't be restricted to size. Also, I would think that if given the need for energy to sustain itself it would need to develop a means to get from one place to another expending the least amount of energy to cover the farthest amount of distance. the think would be moving in mega slow motion. No need to be quick right?

The Universe is not only indifferent...but full of endless possibilities to the layman.
The probability of events occurring based on mere speculation and open-ended questions is not unlike opening up Pandora's box only to find now 100 new questions incomprehensible to mere mortals knowledge or understanding, not unlike a pile of ants having little or no comprehension of quantum mechanics, or why matter exhibits both the characteristics of mass or photons.

There are plenty of other theories as well, that simply aren't mentioned because they involve metaphysics or are speculative without logical extrapolation, or are simply undignifying to human hubris.
I myself find it entirely logical that any race that cannot figure out how to endure peacefully for even a decade would never have the ability to survive it's evolutionary nature for the thousands of years required to gain star technology. Human nature I suspect is evolutionary, and based on consumption and the survival instinct of the individual, as if hardwired into us. Spiritual enlightenment however is in the software, and passed on as learning at best. We are our own filter on the physical level, and how we treat our own planet should be more important to us than a new Lexus, or the fate of the Universe, else we will never reach to the ends of our solar system, much less colonize the Galaxy. At our current level of development, we are like dogs teaching ourselves tricks. Yet underneath it all we are still dogs. Perhaps, as the pop song suggests, We'll Make Great Pets... Scanned the article quickly but didn't see any mention of parallel universes. Read a good book on the topic by Kaku. Briefly, when you walk into your living room and turn on your radio, you hear one station. Does that mean the others aren't there?

Yes well we have instruments for testing that, including the radio itself. I personally don't believe other dimensions exist.

Stephen Hawking has said it all....... Aliens almost certainly exist but has warned humanity not to try and make contact for fearing that the consequences would be disasterous.
Much truth to be said about that...................... In discussing the recent murders in California by that young wacko kid, a friend came up with just as wacko a theory about guns in America. According to him, "the government already has been contacted by aliens and is aware an invasion is eminent. By pressing for more gun ownership, this allows more gun carrying citizens a chance to defend themselves against the aliens". Whew!!!!!!!!! |

It was in interesting article.
The subject has been discussed and theorized about for as long as humans have looked up with wonder. We know the answers to a lot of questions that puzzled previous generations. The new questions keep coming up unanswered. Until proof of another civilization comes up we can only guess. My guess: the universe is just too big. There is no way to travel faster than light and no magic warp drive or stable wormholes. I hope I live long enough to find out there are other civilizations in the galaxy. I really can't imagine we will even know about intelligence in other galaxies.
