Victim of society.

There was a time when kids were taught that they came into the world with nothing and would leave with nothing, and everything they get in between they have to bust their butts and EARN.
They got nothing coming, it's up to them to go get it. Sink or swim, work or starve.

They were also taught that along the way there will be bad people. People that will tease, people that will bully. Life isn't fair, life isn't easy, be tough, fight back, It's a fact of life, learn to deal with it.
Stand up for yourself, learn to take a punch.
And we did just that. When life went to crap we pulled ourselves back up by our bootstraps and tried harder. We did not blame everyone else in the world because we didn't get everything given us on a silver platter. We didn't hater everyone else if we didn't succeed, we knew it was our fault, not everyone else's fault.

fast forward to today: a (slight) majority of the people in this country tell kids that they are ENTITLED to everything they can dream of.
They DESERVE all good things and no bad things.
They DESERVE to get a ribbon or trophy just for showing up.
They DESERVE to get straight A's just because someone else got them.
They are ENTITLED to go through life without ever getting teased, bullied, or hassled in any way.
They are taught to TELL a teacher, but never fight back.

So a kid develops an expectation where everything in life goes perfect, where he gets to be the homecoming king, the star athlete, all the chicks dig him, and the gubmint takes all the money away from everyone else and gives it to him until no one else has more than him or has it better than him.

But one day he wakes up and figures out that percentage of the population has been LYING to him. Life isn't perfect, life isn't easy, there are people out there that won't like him, and that may treat him poorly. He will not get everything he wants just by snapping his fingers.

So he gets mad. He gets upset at being fooled, at being ripped off. Why did they lie to me? He says. Why did they tell me I was ENTITLED to everything when it wasn't true?
They said I can have everything, it's their fault!

And he gets resentful, because he still believes he deserves all that was promised him.
So he strikes out killing people. That'll teach them to lie to me he says.

Unfortunately people like him strike out randomly and do not just kill those who perpetuate the lies. They kill the honest people too.

That's all there is to it sports fans!

The problem here is mental illness.

Aside from not having a balanced attitude toward the opposite sex.

I don't know how he was raised or who his mentors were but obviously he needed someone to set him straight wrt to the opposite sex.

In his mind he was a victim.

Now that is mental illness!

Very well put. Thanks for articulating what will enviably be the downfall of America. This country did not become what it is without adversity.

2nd amendment
open borders
300 million guns already in the US.

Ain't gonna happen. Anyone who wants one will always be able to get one, and relatively easily.

So the solution must be found elsewhere.

Yep, and those knives he used on his 3 roommates, and fertilizer, and pressure cookers, and gasoline, and matches, and propane tanks, and all the stuff the unabomber used on his victims, and threaded pipes, and, and, and...

Another tragic day where a lost individual thinks things aren't working out according to plan and it must surely be someone else's fault. A moment of silence for the families of the fallen including this twisted young lad. A textbook sociopath.

Sounds like an entitled spoiled brat that had every advantage, then got mad when the rest of society didn't kiss his ass like mom and dad did. I got picked on as a kid and I certainly didn't always get the girl, but it never occurred to me that it was someone else's fault. Learning how to deal with adversity is an important part of growing up, pity many parents don't seem to realize that.

And before the gun control kooks chime in, let's also be clear that he stabbed three people and ran down several more in his car. The root cause isn't the weapon, because there are too many choices of weapon.

This wasn't a problem with him being a spoiled brat - it was a problem with him not knowing how to handle the opposite sex. Which (IMHO) happens every day with men everywhere.....basing their happiness on getting laid. C'mon......that's just being stupid....not being a spoiled brat.

I wonder if he ever had a good dog by his side.

You know.......man's best friend?

This is not a gun control issue or a spoiled brat issue or a stupid kid issue. It's a mental health issue. This person had mental problems his whole life and was being treated by mental health professionals for them. From what I've heard so far, his family was doing everything "right" in getting him help and trying to deal with his condition. However, once a person is 18, they cannot be forced into therapy or medication or institutionalization without a court order. Further, up until the last year, he had not shown any signs of violence or aggression that would trigger a move to institutionalize him. When his family saw some of the videos he posted (not the one that was shown after this incident), they notified the SB police to check on him, which they did, and he conned them into believing he was not a threat to his own safety or anyone else's--the criterion for taking him into custody for mental evaluation. Add to this the fact there is no reporting of his mental health problems to data bases used for gun purchases because none of the mental health hospitalizations were court ordered or otherwise against his will.

The "experts" in the media always talk of missing the "red flags" in cases like this, but the truth is you often cannot see a red flag until the incident has happened. The behaviors that caused concern were being addressed by health care professionals. How potentially dangerous did they deem him to be? We don't know. The red flags that no one saw were when he bought his weapons and wrote his manifesto and that was because they were hidden until the act was carried out. The prior red flags only became obvious after the fact.

There are literally thousands of mentally unstable individuals like him that will never become violent, so how does society find the ones that will? Many of his "red flag" behaviors do not lead to a killing spree by others. We have a system where mental health is protected by privacy laws unless the judicial system is involved. Do we want it another way? If so, to what degree? I don't have the answer.

At this point, I'm reluctant to trash the parents, given what I've read so far. I know too many families that have a member with metal health issues that try everything possible to help them and, once the member is an adult, the family's hands are tied. My thoughts and sympathies are with the victims and their families. My fear is incidents like this will happen again and for similar reasons.

Well said and I agree, L.J.

I didn't understand why everyone was calling him a spoiled brat when it was obvious that wasn't the reason this happened.

I still wonder if he had a good dog as a companion if he would have been better able to effectively deal with his issues of opposite sex rejection/loneliness.

I also think "the right" mentor could have helped.

All conjecture of course but that's all we have at this point to work with, I think.
