I've become a desert heat wuss!
I grew up in El Paso. Hiked thru the desert with little water. Road a bike across the city. No problem. Ran cross country and didn't die. I never had a camelback.
Now? I jogged this morning and cleared out a shed. I am peeing brown dust. I bet I have pounded a gallon of water today. I have not pissed. You desert residents. Kudos. I can't go it anymore. That cliff is dead. I miss my CA climate. Sent via Jedi mind trick.

Age is a, well, you know what. I was an elite athlete once. Now things that you describe are normal. And I try to work out on a regular basis. Just blame it on Mother Nature.
And FWIW, I would much rather be hot than cold. I figured that out on a ski trip 10 years ago.

I've been in Colorado, Montana and Idaho over the last couple weeks and coming back to the Phoenix heat just wasn't that much fun.

Where are you, Cliff?
We pay theough the nose to live in L.A. but I'm sitting at a sidewalk cafe having a Chinese chicken salad and enjoying the sights on Sunset Plaza right now, so it seems worth it. My car will be a little hot from the sun when I get back in it but it's probably a high of 80 deg today. ![]() |

Getting old sucks....plain and simple. Hot weather or cold weather does not matter. I can't take it anymore.

When I was top of my game, age 28, I did a June mountain bike ride in Palm Springs. Easy 105F. I went through 3 water bottles inside 1 hr and started getting chills. Wobbled back to hotel and added a couple gallons of water th the system. Scary. As a kid I loved the heat. Now there's no way. Even spring baseball in PHX is a hydration test. Lots of skin lotion, chap stick, and cool water. Having grown up in SoCal I don't enjoy humidity extremes.

I ride my motorcycle to work here in Tucson every day and tomorrow it's going to be 109. When I leave work I soak a long sleeve shirt and wear it under my jacket. It keeps me surprisingly comfortable. Luckily I work 1/2 mile from I-10 and it's 8 miles to my exit which is 3 miles to my home. I don't think I would do it if I had to ride through town in stop & go traffic. The dry heat is nice but when the summer rains come in July, it gets humid and uncomfortable.

Cliff, you are just getting old bud.
![]() Work has been killing me, and the last time I rode my bike was over 3 1/2 weeks. This morning, around 80 degrees, I went out to try and blow off some steam. did my usual 35 miles with a 4 mile hill ( I hate that freaking hill) and drank two bottles of waters. I was hurting near the end. When I got home, ate something and fell asleep on the floor in my riding clothes. My kids woke me up about two hours later because they want to go get ice-cream. 50 is is going to nip me in the butt in a few years, I hear its going to get worst. ![]() |

Heck why do you think the snowbirds come in November and leave in April? Us older Canadians can't stand the cold in winter here and can't stand the heat in summer in Arizona.
Not so much being a desert wuss just being smart! Multiple property ownership is another matter altogether though. G. |

I'm good with the heat, did siding on my house most of last week with temps in the 90s and hellish humidity. Except for drinking lots of water my fat ass was fine. The cold on the other hand, I'm turning into a total puss. I used to want to retire to the Colorado mountains, not anymore. A lake house somewhere that never gets cold sounds much better.

Cold I can handle. I do realized my recent 20 deg sleeping bag should have been a 10 deg Bag.
So much for sleeping naked ![]() Sent via Jedi mind trick.

I love the heat; the hotter, the better. Granted, my family moved to Tucson when I was 2, and I've spent most of my life here, minus my stint in the Army, so I'm pretty used to it. On the flip side, I HATE cold. Spent 4 years in Boston (and a winter in Korea); didn't like either very much. It did kinda open my eyes to how well we adapt, however. Being a self-proclaimed "desert rat," I was able to adapt to the cold winters rather quickly, and adapt again to the desert environment once I came home. The human body is a marvelous thing...

Get off my lawn!

When it is HOT I don't sweat, I spray. I can drink a LOT of water and not pee. My clothes will be soaking wet. My sweat glands work just fine, especially my forehead. I have to have a large sweat band that I have to take off and wring the sweat out of or I will not be able to see.
I was in awe at the Mexicans that replaced my roof. It was 100+ degrees on the ground. They were up there all dang day. They did take a lunch break but they were busting ass from sun up until after sundown. They each had a bottle of water but I would need a garden hose to keep up with my water needs in that heat.
