Sons first time behind the wheel

My oldest son just got his license at 16-1/2 last Thursday.
Saturday I took him to his high school to learn how to drive stick in the 911.
After about 45 minutes he was getting the hang of the 901 trans. Yesterday he drove us to Cars & Coffee in Santa Barbara. Only one stall.
The grin on his face says it all and while he has always loved going for rides I think he likes being behind the wheel a lot more!

I hear about kids not wanting to learn to drive. That is just alien to my way of thinking. I got my license the day after I turned 16. My birthday was a Sunday that year.

I agree, though I'm dealing with the same thing with my step-son. Bought him a car when he was 14, thinking we'd do some work on it together. He was never interested. At 15.5, got his permit (failed the test once). Started teaching him to drive in my very nice 350Z; he had no interest. I totally don't get it...

When my sister and I started driving, one of the first cars our Dad put us in was a 1941 Buick Roadmaster 4 Dr sedan that belonged to my Grandfather. It had the big straight 8 engine with tons of torque. Made it easy for beginners to learn how to use a clutch without stalling! After we had mastered the Buick, he let us drive his '54 Ford V8 w/3 on the tree. Eventually we got to drive our Mother's car that had an automatic tranny. When I was in the Navy (Seabees), I was one of the only ones in the group that could drive a manual gearbox vehicle. Since we had lots of 2 1/2 ton and 5 ton trucks that talent came in handy!

I like many on this board starting driving at an early age, 11. Learned on my grandfathers farm in Utah during the summer driving tractors and jeeps.

My son had his permit for just over a year. He loved driving but would always say, " dad there are to many drivers not paying attention". It took him awhile to become comfortable with that and having a better sense of his surroundings.

I bought that 911 my senior year in high school with my own money at age 17. It's always been my "car" but being able to share the experience of an early 911 with out all the distractions of modern vehicles is nice and never seems to disappoint the person behind the wheel.

Planning on a track day with him this fall.

I have one thing to say , I let my son drive my custom VW bug to school , He did great and then one day the wife called and said he backed it out of the driveway and right into my truck. I wasn't mad he was ok but be carful he has alot of distractions at that age trying to learn how to drive... I would not let him take the car by himself for a long time.
I have one more son to teach driving, I am glad one is done.
Oh yeah he wants to know when he can take the Porsche. NEVER NEVER NEVER

Take the cell phone and social media away. When I was 16...we wanted to drive to go hang out with our friends. Get away from parents. It was freedom.

Seriously. I've heard the same thing. Crazy. I "borrowed "my dad's camaro when I was 14. I'm still technically grounded since he yelled FOREVER!

Yeah, I hear you. I tried to explain to him the world that having a license opens up--wasn't buying it (he never hangs out with friends). Then, I explained to him that we live in Arizona--it's big, with crappy public transportation. Told him once he's 16 (he is now), he's getting a job. How'd he plan on getting to that job after school; on the weekends? Moved on to how's he plan on getting back/forth to college, and whatever job he had there, etc.

That was months ago, and a couple weeks ago, he says he'll get his license. He understands the NEED, but still doesn't have the WANT. BUT, he doesn't have a B average, so won't be driving, lol. (Yes, I'm an ass)

My collector car insurance (AMHI, USAA's collector car insurance) specifies no one under 25 can drive the car. Are other policies different?

That's the reason I don't let the kids drive the 911. I'd like to be able to let them drive it occasionally but only if they are covered.

I taught Zack to drive manual when he was around 14. Took him to isolated areas in my old Audi TT. No torque to speak of so it was a bit of a challenge but he got it within a couple hours. Now he's 17 and driving my 996 6M on the weekends (with me along) is a breeze





Many of Zack's friends don't drive - no interest. Strange. Zack loves the freedom and finds any excuse to head out in his car.

That is cool Dan!! Those drives to Big Bear with the boys seems ages ago, then again, seems just like yesterday.

I am thinking about jumping back into the p-car scene with a Boxster S and will probably teach Cam in it!

Len, No worries on letting him drive the 911 alone. I already offered and he declined. Says its fine if I am with him but he knows its not his car and he is not ready for that, his words.

Dave 911 - My insurance coverage will cover him. Already checked into that. But it would be a one and done thing.

Paul- Never got to drive anything that cool on my gramps property! Just small John Deer stuff and an old Jeep that was a postal truck.

Java - Yes Coast Village Road. They have C&C every sunday there now. Lots of old and new alike. Zack looks real comfortable in the drivers seat. Good for you both!

We are currently looking for a car (used) for him. I have agreed to pitch in half of the money but he has to come up with the other half, pay for his own gas and help with insurance. No problem he says. He has been working for a few years babysitting and doing yard work for people in our area. Last summer he started working for me in my warehouse. He reports directly to the supervisor out there and had to take all the tests and go through the interview process to get the job. He is back working for me this summer again and will continue in the fall when he is back in school as long as he mantains his GPA
He has a 3.7 GPA and has all his community service done. He starts his senior year this fall.

He has turned out to be a pretty good kid.
