What will I do with my Rolex now that the watch is coming?
Think I'll just take a pass on the i-watch.
Anyone going to get one?? ![]() 10 famous pre-iWatch timepieces - Slide Show - MarketWatch |

Depends what it does. Not interested in merely a geeky "watch".
There are some wrist functions that would be useful to me. For example, when I'm riding and receive a call or text, instead of pulling over and fishing out my iPhone, it would be convenient to simply lift my wrist and glance, or give a voice command, or talk. If it includes health monitor functionality, that will be intriguing too. It would be very nice to have HR without wearing a chest strap, and movement/calories without an extra wrist band. |

Umm, no thanks. One phone is enough for me.

Look at what's featured in iOS 8 - a lot of it supposedly has to do with exactly those kind of features - medical records, heart monitoring, exercise logging, stuff like that. The preliminary reports seem to mesh pretty well with the target role / audience for an iWatch type device.
I have no need - I have a Fitbit and a Garmin unit for cycling that already tracks routes, HR, wattage output, etc. It's kind of a cool idea but I hardly think it's going to be the next iPhone. I'm guessing it's Apple's next Newton - good product but far too limited of a target audience and ultimately a due from wonkish bean-counter standpoints. Maybe I'll be wrong but I'd be surprised to see this thing be anything other than lukewarm in terms of sales.

Fitbit and similar "fitness band" products are selling around 800K units a quarter.
Of first-gen smartwatches, Galaxy Gear sold 500K units in 1Q14 despite being a crappy product. Pebble is selling roughly 100K units each qtr, despite being a tiny company w/ no marketing and very limited functionality. So there is the seed of a market there, currently 6MM units/year for the current "early adopter/geek" products, that is ripe for big players with strong app ecosystems and marketing. It might end up being like the iPod, iPhone, and iPad markets - in all cases, Apple came into an early stage market and took it to another level. In this case, though, Google is coming after the market too.

THe other day I found out that a guy that I work with has a Samsung smart watch (he's got the "Gear Fit"). It's not a phone, it uses blue tooth to talk to your phone and let know know what's going on with your phone. He actually has that feature disabled. He says he's using it mostly for fitness stuff, pedometer, heart rate, etc.... I took a peak at it. It's very slim and small, very lightweight and pretty neat. I won't be getting on, but it was actually pretty cool.
This is the one that he has. ![]() ![]() ![]()

I like that Samsung's form factor, because I could wear it on my right wrist, leaving my actual watch - mechanical, 40+ years old, diver - on my left wrist.
Edit - never mind - it sounds like a crappy product. http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2014/04/pinnacle-samsungs-activity.html

I think I'll pick one up. I've been wanting to accessorize with something that will go with my ankle monitoring bracelet.

My prediction is they will never have huge market adoption
THough I said the same thing about Tablets many years ago. Why would anybody want a bigger cell phone that cant make calls I hypothesized.
