Question for electronics experts:
I am about to set off on a MC trip and bought a new tank bag that has magnetic hold-downs. I was just reading the short instruction sheet that came with it and lo and behold, it has a warning about putting electronic devices in the bag because of the magnets. Says that it might screw them up. Now they tell me.
![]() It also says something about keeping such devices, (cell phones, laptops, etc.), as far from the magnets as possible if they are in the bag. Like near the top. I was planning on using the bag to store laptop and keep phone on top, under plastic so that I can use map, listen to music, talk on phone using ear buds, etc. It's a loooong trip. I bought the magnetic bag so that it would be easier to bring into gas stations, restaurants, etc. They also make it with straps and some type of quick release, I'm feeling like I really fk'ed up here. No time to exchange before leaving. Here is a pic, sorry for bad lighting. It's night time here. Magnetic deals are visible on the bottom: ![]() Am I screwed here? TIA. ![]()

Two of my tank bags are magnetic, have used them for years w/o any cell phone issues. Probably haven't hauled any laptops but I'm sure a few notebooks and tablets have been in them.

I would use it with no qualms. If you had magnetic memory devices there would be a legitimate concern.

Same here. All I have is a magnetic tank bag. Never had any problems with cell phone, lap top, etc.

Unless its a solid state drive, the hard drive in the laptop is susceptible to loosing data if it gets close to the magnet. Back up anything important before you go and keep the backup at home or in the cloud...

Hi
|
The magnets in your tank bag are not strong enough to cause damage to your electrical devices. The manufacturer of the bag needs to warn you to cover their butt in the event damage occurs.
MIL-STD-810 has a section regarding magnetic pulse and electrical devices if you want to read up on it.

Use geezer voice:
Back in the OLD days when floppies were part of daily computer use a buddy figured he could erase old floppies discs with a magnet and save time. He tried all sorts of magnets and nothing worked 100%. He finally just took scissors to the floppies. End geezer voice.

I'd be more worried that the weight of a laptop will pull the bag off the tank....

Not worried about that. Bag is designed to hold some weight and my laptop is light. May grab a new MacBook Air in Mpls as well. |

If this is true, than Walt on Breaking Bad would have been caught much, much sooner that he was on the show...
