Went to my indy shop yesterday....

and got a quote to fix the CEL light/code P1341 on my 2001 Boxster base(45k miles). P1341 is camshaft deviation of 9.2 left side. While we are in there replace IMS(clutch extra of course) all inclusive price of $6100 .

A Pelican member says this was too much . To change to US prices reduce by 10% so $5500. Indy shop said would have to drop the engine to get better access.

To spend $6100 on a car that is worth at best $12K it is not going to happen. Thanks to the Pelican member that shed some common sense on this situation.

As always you guys are the best.....

Cheers, Guy.

PS Am shopping around for a better price.

I would stop driving that car now. Camshaft deviation can be a sign of a failing ims from what I've read. To me 5k sounds astronomical though. But there is a good deal of labor in that.

You won't get 12 for that car needing that work however.

For what it's worth, my 996 PO did the IMS, RMS, and clutch for about $3k at an indie in Tulsa.

My brother had this done on his boxter, including a clutch and other 'while you're in there' items for less than $3K (indi P car specialist in southern Ontario)

Thanks everybody for the suggestions. Gordner I would not want to drive it to Calgary as it is too far. The furthest I am going to drive it is to a car dealership or another indy shop. I have not made up my mind yet. Fortunately I can use my wife's car in the meantime.
Guy.

Would dropping the engine at home or a buddys shop be out of the question? There are good updated parts and such out there but it might be a couple week project if you have to work slow.

Gordner very generously offered me the use of his garage/lift but I have no experience to do this kind of work so I have declined his offer. Getting it to Calgary by driving it is risky as it is a 3 hour drive.

If it was a 911(4 seats makes it more valuable) I would be more enthusiastic as they have a better resale value. Right now if I drove it it would have the potential to be a $2500 roller so I am taking things really slowly now.....

Will look for a better quality indy shop. Day at a time.
Cheers, Guy.
PS this all gives me time to think about the next vehicle!

I don't blame you. I have a pretty well stocked garage and have done repairs from rebuilds down to maintenance but for some reason taking down a modern Porsche 6 gives me a scary feeling! The cam timing and countless other things I could mess up keep me from even thinking about it!
