Funny, Tesla fanboys gush on about all the Supercharger locations...
...and then insist long trips in a car don't matter. :-/ And I'm certain that all that investment in infrastructure is all for future FREE power. Did I mention that I have a bridge for sale?

Statistically, cross-country car trips are unimportant to the average person. Why argue issues that are largely irrelevant? It *can* be done. But it likely won't be done often in the real world. Same for gasoline powered cars.
Supercharger locations are only important along routes that a Tesla owner would frequently travel. And only to those who intend to use them. Are they free? Not quite. It's free for Tesla S85 owners, and the use of Superchargers was a $2000 option for S60 owners. It's built into the price of the car. Might as well get your money's worth if you own a S85. As I pointed out, even if you never once use a Supercharger (ie, bought a S60 without the option to use them) and charged in-home overnight, it would still make sense 99% of the time. The Superchargers are just icing on the cake, for some.

See how that works?

I'm sure I can come up with a scenario for any product that 'proves' the product is ineffective for 5% of users. The user has to decide for themselves whether the other 95% effectiveness fits their real-world needs, or whether than 5% is enough for them to find a different solution.
We get it, that 5% is important to you, personally. Move on. The rest of us can discuss. You've already decided.

On a forum dedicated primarily to antiquated air cooled 911s, it's amusing that some would dismiss the Tesla as 'not relevant to the total market.'

So slodave - now that you are back with a gas powered vehicle - are you missing the electric 'love'? The first thing I notice as I get into one of my 'regular' vehicles after being in the Volt for a week (or longer) is the noise and the 'busy-ness' of the gas powered car. Unless I want the rumble of that big V8 (or the whine of the flat 6) I find very quickly I get tired of the noise level if I am just getting from point A to point B. I also oddly find that I get irritated more easily in the gas powered vehicle, for some reason I am more willing to 'go with the flow' in the Volt. And another thing - I have no idea of what gas costs - I haven't been at a gas station in months (however, I will have to fill up the gas beasties this weekend, so I will find out in a big hurry). My kwh is .046 in the winter and about .07 in the summer - so a 'tank' of electricity (13 kwh) right now is $.91 and I get about 45 miles to the charge - can't beat fuel costs of .02 a mile... in the winter, it is almost 1/2 that... Plus, I almost always just charge at work - so, my fuel cost is basically nothing.... I know electric vehicles or even EREVs aren't a good choices for everyone - but, they certainly make sense for many commuters.... and isn't having choices sort of what America is all about? If an electric car makes sense for you - buy it, if a gas powered vehicle is a better option for you -then do that....

I like having the option of the Boxster, which gets 21MPG or so in hard driving or the Volt, which is at 114MPG (due to many long trips), or one of several longhood 911s that get - youdontwanttoknow MPG. I use the Volt 2/3 of the time.

But commuting or just getting from A to B - they will now have to pry the Volt from me if they want it back. Best commuter I have ever had, hands down.

Of course you are not too stupid to see this (I think) but are amusing enough to pretend that I wrote, what you claim I wrote, when it's right there above it all. Clown college?

Anyone have any information/data on the real world experience of a EV in the parts of the country with real below zero winters? Curious how the batteries will fare and what interesting technology is used to optimize driving in winter.

installing massive number of recharge stations across the country seems a bit obtuse when the person championing these installs demands that no one really drives - they fly.

Eric didn't post any statistics, just a single data point. But you said "Statistically,..." What statistics? You are an engineer of some sort, right?

How many motor vehicles are sold annually here?
How many Teslas are sold annually? What percentage of motor vehicles are Teslas? Don't know, but there are zeroes to the right of the decimal point. Electric cars are urban commuter cars, silly to claim otherwise. Maybe some day that will change. You guys are confusing distaste for giving lots of dough in the form of government subsidies to rich people that don't need it, with distaste for electric cars.

There are quite a few in my neighborhood and the owners I've talked to seem to love them. They certainly aren't cheap, but seem to be bought by folks that may have otherwise spent 60k+ on a benz/bimmer and its not that big of a deal to pay a bit of a premium for something unique that interests them.
They are luxury/performance vehicles... no doubt about it. The range thing is something to consider, but most family folks around hear have two cars. Typical garage has a nice sedan and then a minivan or SUV. I can see how the road trip range isn't really an issue for most buyers since they'd just take the other car. |

![]() Eric didn't provide any statistics. He used the word "Statistically" in his sentence. He's not an engineer. You claim to be one. If so, you should know better, unless of course, you're just into packaging design, or some thing similar.
