Porsche Developing a Flat-Eight Supercar to Rival the 458

Porsche Developing a Flat-Eight Supercar to Rival the 458

Porsche’s 458-rivaling supercar is expected to go on sale in 2017, and will usher in a wave of new models, such as a turbocharged four-cylinder Boxster and Cayman, as well as a new architecture pegged to underpin all mid- and rear-engine models.
Interesting article, but what I found most interesting was this comment by one of the readers.

As much as I admire and understand what Porsche is doing by designing any engine that's flat, the ideas itself has a big flaw for a person like me, which is wear and tear on one side of the cylinders. Much lower center of gravity and all is very good, but throwing engine out every 50K or so is not something I would be thrilled to do. And I would never drive the car like a pro where that flat design would truly come handy. But, I bet it would be very fun to drive.
I've never heard of cylinders wearing unevenly on flat engines compared to in-line engines or inclined angle V-engines.

Throwing out a flat engine after 50,000 miles.....................all those VW Beetle engines going one million miles or more are just urban legends then?

This guy might have to change his name, not going to live this one down.

Not to mention 911 SC and Carreras going 300,000 miles untouched.

Not to mention the tens of thousands of flat four and six piston aircraft engines...

Rofl.

Back to the topic at hand, I bet a flat-eight will sound absolutely wicked.

Mr. Dick Fitz-well's comment makes it very clear he knows absolutely nothing about internal combustion engines, let alone, Porsche design.

Cylinder wall wear from piston has more to do with rod length/crank stroke (rod/stroke ratio) than cylinder orientation. This guy doesn't know what he's talking about obviously.

I bet thinking about radial engine wear would make his head explode.

Yeah, buy you can fly the plane inverted to even out the piston wear.

Sheesh, you guys know nothing about aircraft engine design.

I'm guessing Mr. Fitzwell is 400 pounds, and, if you do the math, the left side of the car will be heavyer than the right, thus adding more torque to that side, thusly meaning the engine won't perform correctly for the long run. I don't think his name is on the waiting list.

Not sure why a flat 8 is needed...the 911 TT already competes rather well with the 458 IMO...

And a V-whatever wouldn't get some piston wear on the Earth side of the pistons? Everyone know that a straight in-line 4, 6, 8 or 12 is best.
