If you could go back and give your 18yr old self $ advice...

What would it be?

Me? Just start saving. Anything, any amount, any method. Roth IRA. Something.

And school loans are serious.

Don't deviate from the path you've already set down, it will serve you well.

Do 4-6 in the military first, get disciplined and get your head on straight with regards to where you want to go, then do college and knock it out. And don't get married. Ever.

I'd say:

Sell that damn dirt bike before it cripples you!

Climbed off the bike WFO in 5th gear when I was 24, broke my heel clean off.
I didn't go to doctor, my friends convinced me that it was just sprained and that I was a pussy for limping around on it.
After a month or so i could walk with weight on the heel, but I never missed a day of work.

Fast forward 20 years, I wuz at the foot doctor cause somethnig didn't seem right

She looks at the X-ray and sez, why the heck didn't you get that set right with screws and such. I said "get what set"?
She: no one could go around on that without knowing it was broke bad.
Me: well I drank back then.

She: you had any back problems?
me: Yup, L5-S1 lamonectome (sp) bout 2 years after the crash.

then she axs, any knee problems?
me: Yup. One ortho surgery bout 15 years ago which is gettin close to bone on bone now, and the other has torn meniscus and gets cortisone shots bout every 3 months.
Pretty much hobbled me into an old man.

She:
prolly all related, your heel is bout 3/8" offset and shorter now, the skeletal structure tried to make adjust but it didn't turn out too well. Too late to change it now, deal with it.

Bummer. Been paying for that one for a long time and the bills are getting more expensive as I go.

Don't eat the brown acid.*

Financial advice? When you have kids you realize, just like they do, that advice has zippy currency.

Give them a budget and make them stick to it. After their sophomore year in HS, summers are for work. Every summer.

Get up, earn money. Nothing causes financial acumen faster than kids spending money they earned.

Oh, and don't be a douchewiffle selling a used Boxster. Bad form.

*I know, I know: Chip Monck was actually the lighting man for the festival. Being that the promoters forgot to hire an MC, Monck got the job. I as well as many others thought that his announcement was "Don't eat the brown acid." In fact it was phrased "The warning that I've received, you may take it with however many grains of salt you wish, is that the brown acid that is circulating around us is not specifically too good. It's suggested that you do stay away from that. Of course, it's your own trip, so be my guest, but please be advised that there is a warning on that one, OK"?

Noting that Cliff used the "$" sign in his title - meaning related to $$$$$$.........

Buy a couple old Porsches, stick 'em in storage somewhere, and there's your 401K account.

Would have to be longhoods and/or tubs. A Speedster or Roadster tub wouldn't hurt.

American muscle would be a good choice as well.

Or don't buy a Boxster in the first place unless it is a track beast.

Do what you love - there are more important things than money. If however you don't have the balls to pursue what you love, then you better make decent money to try and make it so you can do what you love when you (semi)retire, and have it happen while you still can do the things that you love.
