the King of Beers.
had a top 10 beer!
last weekend i went backpacking. the mission was to "educate" a friend just how difficult it was going to be dragging big packs up and over 10,500 feet in the eastern sierras. his training has been beer, rib cook offs, and cigars..he felt his relative youth, would trump my daily 3 mile trail runs. he's 35, i'm 47...he is way overweight.. anyways, we gave ourselves an overnight with truck camping to adjust our lungs to the 8000+ o2 levels. woke up, donned packs and off we went. i had put a six pack of the only beer some gas station had..regular Bud. they had light..didnt drink any, but i did put the entire icechest into a bear box when we headed out. the hike was AWESOME for me. haha. coming down the mountain, it was 95 degrees. i had given my buddy most of my water. when i got to my truck, i grabbed my ice chest..it was still sloshing with ice water. lots of ice. MY BEER! i took one out, it was like that damn commercial. ice stuck to the can..i slammed half..OMG!! there were angels singing in my mouth. i dumped the other half cuz had to drive. my bud was having muscle spasms. i think i like budweiser! (i still have the other five cans in my fridge)..i dont drink much.. anyone love bud?

Should have put it in his pack and had one at the top of the hike, ala the "Eiger Sanction."
I believe the beer was Coors in the movie.

Um... no!
I remember going backpacking and thinking "OHMYGOSH THIS FREEZE DRIED FOOD TASTES SOOOOOOOOO GOOD!!!" I humbly suggest you were experiencing that phenomena... I am currently addicted to Widmer beer and will have to admit to being a bit of a beer snob... I much prefer going to a brewpub where they make their own beer on premises. However I will admit to downing ice cold Miller when it was the only beverage available in very hot and humid Hawaii... and my first house was in a Latino community where I was the only white guy on the block... their beer of choice was Budweiser... so to bond with my neighbor's I would stroll across the street and share a Bud with them while they wrenched on their cars.

Almost any COLD beer is great when you are hot. The lighter tasting beers are best when you are really hot and the beer is cold. Sam Adams or beer with flavor is great with a meal but not for the situation you were in.

I agree. I often referred to these lighter, "domestic" brews (Bud, Miller, Coors, PBR, etc), as my "lawn mowing" beers, because when kept ice cold they are soo good when you come in from working in the yard all day.

I've had that same taste bud (no pun) orgasm...similar situation. Nothing like it. That's when you know that you like beer...any beer (almost). ![]()

I drink a lot of "chewy" beers in fall and winter, but for spring and summer I like a good hefeweizen or pils. For dark I'll drink Negra Modelo. I tend to drink Coors for really hot weather or wrenching.

agreed. horrible. But, I suppose if it was REALLY hot and I had just finished doing something REALLY strenuous, it would probably seem good.

My beer of choice is Budweiser Platinum in the blue bottles. It has a little higher alcohol content and maybe just a bit stouter than regular Bud. I keep a frosted mug in the freezer for use with whatever beer I drink.

From the movie: “How about a beer?”. Eastwood replies, “If you brought beer up here, you’re even crazier than I thought!” To which Kennedy replies, “I may be crazy, but I’m not stupid. I didn’t carry it, you did. It’s in your pack!”. ![]() I'd post pictures of my favorite scene with George, the young NA woman, but ban island is crowded ![]()

I drink ALOT of beer and a lot of types of beer. I think bud is the all time worst tasting beer ever. However, after hiking up and down a mountain in 95 degree heat, I'm sure I would enjoy a cold bud

Ha! And ruin a good chicken?
Just kidding. When I climb I always bring a real Pepsi for the trek down. Nothing gets your energy back quickly like guzzling a sugar pop. My $0.02. Troy

A good beer is always a good thing, but I always made a stop at Schat's Bakery for some squaw bread too. Unfortunately younger guys tend to think being younger lets them pass on conditioning. Twelve years ago my buddy & I were going back into the Sierras for two weeks, entering over Taboose Pass. The trail starts out in the desert at 5,600 ft. & tops out at 11,500 at the pass. It's one of my favorite ways to get back into a place called Lake Basin, but it's kind of a grind. My buddy's son in his early to mid thirties wanted to join us. We were both 60 at the time, and my buddy told him to get into shape beforehand - which he sort of passed on thinking youth would give him the advantage. It took us two days to get him up to the pass. He complained his thighs were trembling most of the way.
