'79 Countach at auction-- 500 orig. miles

This is the car I wanted when I was 9, in 1979. I know I'm not alone.

Definatley a design well ahead of its time. I have a friend who had one some 20 odd years ago. His father used to own the local Mercedes Dealership! His was the LP500 in white. Looked stunning but drove like a truck. I reckon the look better than some of the newer Lambo's.

I'm guilty! More of a mid-'80s thing for me, though.

I've always been amazed that Lambo had that car in the 70's and Boeing manufactured the 747 in the late 60's. And the SR71. Amazing designs well ahead of their time.

That thing just looks so right. Maybe we're all fortunate we've never had the scratch/wherewithall to actually own one of those, though.

Countach, loosely translated in Italian, means "Holy Cow!"...so I read somewhere years ago.
.
Edit: I saw and heard only one in my life. Sitting on my horse close to an on ramp to Hwy 280 in Woodside, Ca.
Spectacular sound as it rushed up the ramp. Unforgettable.

Near the end of safety as only a top 5 concern. Design and function ruled those days trading for 1 and 2 on each project!

If you take the O out it make it easy to see where it derived from...:

--The word Countach (inroduced in 1971) is an exclamation in the local dialect of piedmonese, generally used when men see very attracrive women and apparently translates to "Holy s**t!". The name stuck when Nuccio Bertone (a famous car desinger and constructor) first saw "project 112".

--The name Diablo is simply the Spanish word for "Devil".

--The name Murciélago comes from a bull that survived 24 sword strokes in an 1879 fight at the arena of Cordoba, and fought with such passion and spirit that the matador chose to spare its life, a rare honor. Ferruccio wasn't a supporter of bullfighing but was born under the sign of Taurus and so named the majority of his cars after famous bulls or bull breeds.

--The Gallardo model is named after a famous breed of fighting bull and is also Spanish for "gallant".

As a child of the 80s, I had a Countach, Testatossa, and 959 on my wall. Still want all three!
