Irrefutable proof that Toyotas hold their value. Paging Seahawk
I follow the auctions, and there were some big surprises at Pebble Beach this past weekend. This was one of them:
![]() Yep. $137,500 (plus fees) for a US-Spec 1980 Toyota FJ40 Not particularly rare or desirably equipped, but under 2000 original miles and as-new condition Still, $137K is a lot of money What do you think? Will this particular example be worth $150K anytime soon? Or did the buyer stick his foot in it? Paul, you need to buy one before they skyrocket!

That would be tough to recover any time soon IMHO. I don't get it. But the buyer probably is loaded and doesn't care. It is a bit scary to see how people jump on tangible assets these days.

That was probably just a bauble for someone whose $10M car sold earlier in the day. The car scene @ Monterey over the weekend is so far removed from most of our day-to-day reality, it's hard to wrap one's head around it. Rich people are there seeing the gavel drop on high 7-figure cars and something for $100k just seems like a door prize or souvenir of the weekend.
That's my theory, anyways. I'll adjust my opinion if any other FJ40s sell for 6-figures.

The money thrown around over Monterey week is simply mind boggling. Not just the auctions. The rich are getting richer, no doubt about it.

" under 2000 original miles " -- Wow!
Today I saw an old FJ (worn) being offloaded from a flatbed - someone's rust-fix project. They are cool. Not many surviving. I think speeder nailed it.

I better run to buy this one that's sitting across from my friends in Torrance. They want 18k for it. Diesel imported from down under. Crazy for this kind of money, but if there are plenty, why not piss it away? That will do other FJ owner some good.

The buyer only stuck his foot in it if $120k matters to them. The scene was thick with Silicon Valley and Hedge Fund types who would not miss $100k if it fell out of their wallet. Someone could have bought that thing and then forgot about it and flew home on their G5 and left it behind.
It's that crazy. And the prices have that much connection to the rest of the market or the calendar year, IMO. |

Wow.
The market is already waayy off the rails on FJ's, at least in my mind. They are nice but without mechanical mods are an around town truck only. There seems to be a lot of guys like me looking for these and 2002s ![]() Seriously, Eric was great and I wish we could have finished the job...it just seemed prudent to let him off the hook for that particular FJ.

Heck, people still use 40s around here to go four wheeling. Here's a fun vehicle on our local craigslist:
![]() Less than 1/10th the price of the one above... 1974 Toyota FJ 45

Curious what the real money is on that. Maybe $50K?
