Information on installing a new Skylight

Like all things, whether I do it myself or hire pro's I want to go in 100% informed. So I am here, looking as I often do for guidance or a recommended web-site for information on installing skylights with proper flashing etc. At first I thought I was going to install a NYC style galvanized old-school skylight but the building requires a dormer type, actually a curbed-dormer sitting on the ceiling/roof which is slightly pitched. I will post a drawing soon of the plan.
The opening will be 4 x 7 feet. 7 feet will be vertical east-facing windows, supported by a dormer shed emerging from the gently-pitched asphalt roof.

The building-hired architect was so useless, his drawing was a joke. I will post that also for your entertainment.

Thanks in advance to the Pelican Brain-Trust!

Based upon your description, it sounds as if the skylight is running downslope 7' and is 4' wide, is this correct? This should allow it to fit between the existing joists.

A few things you will want to know:

Type of roof--you mention asphalt, I am assuming there is insulation and decking under the asphalt. Is the apshalt roof a warrantied type--such as a Firestone or similar? If so, they are very strict about who installs penetrations into their nroof systems and an unauthorized install can void their warranty.

Slope of roof --you mentioned 'gentle" get the actual pitch--1/2 on 12, 1 on 12, etc

What is inside? drop ceiling, vaulted ceiling?

Where is the skylight in realtion to the peak of the roof?

All of this will factor in the installation and type of flashing/curb needed
