We have a similar tradition in the fire service for our fallen brothers.

Same in the Navy at our "Dining In".
It is a simple ceremony focused on the empty table, toasted by, at least in my squadrons, the most senior person in attendance. In a night of revelry and joy at being able to do what we do, the toast to the fallen is a remarkable moment. When I was the CO, I asked my officers to bring pictures of squadron mates and friends, of any service, who died in the service of this great country to our Dining In (and our Dining Out) and we set them on the table of honor. But I have to say, after the solemn honoring, in the best of naval traditions, came the stories: "Booger couldn't have organized a two stick fire"..."Taco couldn't have solo'ed a kite", etc. Humor and love in the same breath of air as we prayed for their families and fine memories. A wink and a smile as a gentle reminder that we are all, some day, a picture on the table, someones lost love.
