Phones have become so core to our lives that buying into an operating system has become a bit like choosing a religion. Apple phones appeal to people who want someone smart to make choices for them; Android phones appeal to people who can't stand that. (This extends to our relationships: Dating service Plenty of Fish tells me male Apple owners are even 58% more likely to enter into a relationship with another Apple owner.)

Sorry for the double post. I intended this thread to be in PPOT, not PARF. But Religion in the title I guess automatically moves it to PARF.

I think it is actually going the other way.


Every cell phone can basically do everything you need or want it to do, so they are more like commodities. I know I participate in much less frequent discussions on the topic in the last year or 2.

I hate them both equally.

My wife's iPhone 5c is infuriatingly over-simplified. Every task other than dialing seems to be a chore. Say I want to email a photo from it--I have to choose "full size photo" and it refuses to remember (or let me tell it to remember) that selection. Every. Single. Time.

Yesterday as I was driving home I noticed a bright light emanating from my shirt pocket. Apparently my Samsung Galaxy something-or-other had just rebooted for no discernable reason. Even more exciting, the Bluetooth connection refused to intialize and I had to shut it down and boot it again to get it back. This is the second phone in 2 months with the exact same problem. Add to that all the obnoxious bloatware installed by Samsung and my carrier and it's a wonder the damned thing even dials out.

And these turd-monkeys think I'm going to wear their "tech" on my wrist? NFW.

IMO the Achilles heal of Android phones is the bloatware installed by the carrier. Apple wisely negotiated a sweet deal to lock out that sort of stuff from the iPhone. Sure the Android can be rooted and totally reconfigured but most people don't have the inclination to do that. When my family got their Galaxy S2 phones I immediately rooted them and installed custom cyanogen ROMs. Much better performance.

IMO Android products like OnePlus One reveal the true Android experience. Just wish I could convince my wife and daughter of that. They are determined to go with iPhone (5S - I never spend money for latest tech) this time.

Samsung bloatware is indeed very irritating, I also rooted the thing and installed cyanogenmod. Much better.

What I don't get is folks who complain about Apple's iOS being so locked down. Yet, when they root their phones and screw with the OS (aka "customizing") they complain that their phone is always crashing.

I've been in IT for nearly 25 years- and have done quite a bit of coding in my life. And while I'm I pretty decent coder, and I understand the various components of tech, I see no need to open up a device's OS and muck around with it. I don't know the minute details of that OS as much as the developers do -- so why would I think I can improve on their software? I can't - and neither can 99% of those folks who have hacked their phone expecting it to perform better.

But there are those who will always poke things and tweak them. Fine. Go ahead - but don't complain to me about my iPhone that is locked up -- I don't need to or want to tweak the OS. Also - don't complain when your phone crashes all the time.

Maybe I'm older now - but for me, the "My phone just works" notion outweighs the "I can modify my phone" mentality.

Bloatware might be annoying but its so easy to get rid of, I'll take that any day over a phone that costs twice as much, takes 4x longer to fix issues and 10x longer to add features that have been around on other platforms for years.

I will give it to Apple, it takes very special marketing to get people to stand in line year after year and pay crazy $$$ to "upgrade" their phone

I go to lots of car-centric trade shows. The attendees (mostly men) seem to have android phones, and often the bigger the better. However, a while back I attended a 'trade-show trade-show' where many of the attendees were women, but also lots of men. The men seemed to have a more 'mixed' bag of phones (android and iPhones) while the women however, almost entirely iPhones. These are really busy people - if you are responsible for massive trade show booths (the kind that roll in on a few semis) - you know the importance of communication. I found it interesting when you just need to get stuff done, and without 'drama' it seems like iPhones win in real-world situations.

For the record:
1. Apple released a tool that users can use to remove the free U2 album from their list of albums on their iDevices
2. Technically, it is not on their device, but listed as an album can be downloaded to their devices if they choose to do so. It appears as if an album that was purchased, but not yet downloaded to their individual devices.
3. It is a free album for crying out loud! I've never heard so many folks complain about getting something for free. And if you don't want it - just don't download it. In Apple iTunes store, and in Google Play - there's a bunch of free stuff available to the masses - but folks don't complain about that...

Who really needs MORE app's? More devices?

People will, in large part, stick to what OS/religion they know.

The battle now is over service costs - bang for the monthly bucks.

The thread isn't supposed to be about which is better, Apple or Android, but why the so serious disagreement. Instead of enjoying the differences, we compete to say "mine is better".

Can't we all get along?

+1 --having choices is great.

I'm considering an i-6 --liking the larger size and that sapphire screen.

OTOH, maybe I'll go back to a flip-phone and use my tablet and data-plan for the mobile cmptr needs.

I will note that the Time article (linked above) says:

To achieve anti-reflection with sapphire, it has to have a coating applied which, over time, will wear off.

Which seems to be complete BS. The sapphire lens on my watch has anti-reflective coating (both sides) and has zero signs of wear after 15+ years of daily use. This is the most durable surface finish I have ever seen.

And, when clean, it often appears that the lens is missing.
