Remember, they intentionally look for stupid, they want to weed out smart people.

If you respond to that you are a good mark.

I got a phone call the other day that was a very nice man that reminded me the warranty on my car was about to expire and they could extend the warranty. I acted excited the had called. Then he asked about my car and I told him the 1986 El Camino only had 330,000 miles and a warranty would be great. He was rude and hung up! The bastard.

LOL. Last one I got, I told them that we didn't accept cash. Payment to be made in the form of 2 goats, a vestal virgin, and 3 hot meals of their choice. They agreed to terms but I am still waiting for payment. I hope the girl is okay, the meals were for her while shipping....

The phishing is getting really good now. I've had a few lately from Apple iTunes (I'm sure this one was the one that got the celebs), eBay, PayPal.
All looked genuine, logos, email addresses, all except for the link to the site.

My favourite trick is using 2 V's together to look like w's .

I got an offer in the mail a couple days ago for 'water line' insurance which covered the line between the meter and my house, for $12 a month.

I got the usual long string of numbers on the caller display meaning overseas call from places unknown. Then click clunk as the extra cheap rate voice over IP kicks in. An Asian voice tells me she is from Microsoft and I have a problem with my computer. I keep murmuring "Chinese Japanese, Chinese Japanese" while she tries to speak. Then she yelled a phrase well know in English at me an hung up. The method seemed to work quite well

I love these ones, apparently some people do click and unpack the attached zip file... Letting the virus loose ....

I got this about a week ago.. after I had been in touch with some elder law attorneys.... However, I didn't share my email address with either..

One of the newer fraud issues is sending fake invoices to businesses. They get into the payables group and they are simply paid. I expect this will work with smaller, but not tiny companies.

Got one a few days ago from an "unknown caller" saying my visa got declined for renewal of the LA Times. Told him I don't cc #'s over the phone. He said they would discontinue my Times subscription. Wifey pays them online.

I'm feeling left out. No one has ever tried to scam me directly but looking at this thread I'm guessing it's only a matter of time.
But I have received dubious emails. All good, straight to the "junk" folder.

This is a real concern. I'd imagine a lot of people working in accounts payable don't check every invoice thoroughly.
It makes you wonder how much money has been stolen this way without the victims ever knowing.

Most of the scam e-mails are due to my e-mail address being publicly available on a US government contractor website. I guess I should have created an e-mail address for government e-mails only.

It is fairly easy to tell the scammers from the real requests for a quote.

Since I moved in to the new house, I have gotten 15, yes 15 letters telling me that I needed to respond immediately regarding my mortgage. Each letter had the name of my lender on the front of the envelope. It was only when I read the fine print (on the first 2 or 3) that I saw that it was an offer for mortgage insurance--and very expensive mortgage insurance at that.

I fill the reply mail envelope with coupons and other jibberish. Mortgage insurance solicitations are filled out on behalf of Darth Vader, Mickey Mouse or whoever else. It's immature, but whatever.

Old thread - but this appeared to be an appropriate posting. My wife gets this email below from "yahoo". She doesn't even have an account - but they are reporting an login from Nigeria - and want her to "change" her password. Of course the sender address shown is not even from a yahoo domain, and the "yahoo" hotlink is to some obscure site with hongkong in the URL:
