For Chrome I use the "Hola" extension. Works well. Only a slight learning curve. Free too.
I've only failed a few times to access a geo restricted site. Always when trying to view a particular Belgian website using the Belgian proxy. I assume/guess that particular website is aggressive at identifying and blocking the local proxies, and Belgium being small, the proxies may not switch around enough. Again, just guessing. |

My Comcast + TiVo bill used to be $250/mo for triple play + TiVo. Replaced the landline with an ATT wireless line for $12/mo, Comcast + TiVo bill went to $145. Now I have it at $103 including thr Hulu, and it sounds like I can get to $40-75 depending on which telco option I choose.

The Chrome/Hola extension/AppleTV combo is working great with the BBC feed of the race.

I found this site that has a sports package for $10/mo, includes Universal Sports and BEIN sports. Then add the NBC Sports TdF online package and that is as much bike racing as you can get on TV in the USA. Still spotty coverage - this mornings's Giro Il Lombardia was only viewable through pirate feeds.

I cut the cord about 2&1/2 years ago and i'll never go back unless they start offering channels à la carte. I have Netflix and Amazon Prime, got rid of Hulu because of excessive ads.
I tried 3 different store bought antennas but my homemade one works the best. This site was a big help for aiming help: AntennaWeb - Address ![]() ![]() ![]() Mine isn't pretty but it does the job. ![]() I'm up to 65 channels now. That's up from around 30 with the crappy indoor antenna. ![]() ![]() |

I haven't had cable in years. I had DTV with tivo as an additional room till my uncle in US cancelled it. Been using nothing but Netflix for 8+ months. Recently the Cable-co started annoying me that they wanted to give me free cable and PVR for 6months. I finally said fine install it.
Having used Directv and tivo previously, I was quite underwhelmed with what Canada has to offer. I've never seen so many commercials, and the Canadian PVR is pretty much setup so you must watch some commericals every 1/2 hour (10 minute buffer) when using live tv. Movie only channels all seem to have commercials. ![]() A 15 year old tivo is a better PVR then the newest the local cable company offers. I don't think I've watched cable more then 3 hours since they installed it 2 months ago. I keep going back to netflix. And that is Canadian netflix which is a watered down version of what you guys in the US have. ![]() I will definitely be returning the box before my 6 month promo ends.

that antenna site is cool. I use a Phillips indoor antenna and get loads of channels on my non-cable tv. It is small and easily adjusted

I didn't know BBC UK streamed F1? That would fill the main "gap" that cord cutting creates for me.

I would like to do this - I've not taken the time to figure out if the few routine shows I like to watch are on HuluPlus (and for how long).
My biggest questions are 1) what replaces the DVR if only a live stream/antenna is the source; b) how to get F1 recorded. Appreciate any advice. Don

We have this. Great for the kids to find everything plus it can stream to other units, or vice versa.

I cut the cord a year ago... The hardest thing has been the fact that we live on the edge of our possible OTA antenna reception area. So I get maybe 10 stations at any given time. We like to watch football and baseball mostly and that is great as most NFL games are OTA... baseball not so much. For BB we go over a friend's house with cable and go hang out with them
![]() We have Netflix and Amazon Prime. We use XBMC on a HTPC (home theatre PC) on occasion using the XBMC mashup (do a search) for some content. We got tired of Hulu same ole network crap. Check out Reddit/Cordcutters for additional info - I learned a lot from that forum. Don - to record over the air I use a cheap $40 TV capture card in my desktop - using Windows Media Center - it has complete TV listings as well. If I were to do it again I would buy this: Amazon.com: SiliconDust HDHomeRun DUAL High Definition Digital TV Tuner HDHR3-US (Black) (2013 Model): Electronics But I just don't care enough to record shows anymore. My bill went from around $250 to now $40 for Internet, around $20 for Netflix. Amazon is a freebie as far as I am concerned. We just received an offer from Comcast in the mail... they are offering us Blast Internet, an HD DVR and HD cable, with Showtime and HBO (limited period) for some $99 a month for a 2 yr contract. We briefly considered it and decided for us - we like not having TV in our lives as much. Saving $$$ is a pleasant bonus.

I am in a hotel, watching TV. 60 channels of erectile dysfunction ads and heads talking and saying nothing. This reinforces my decision to dump cable TV.

Update. I tried Dish's Sling TV service for awhile. For $20/mo you get six or seven ESPN channels, so it seems great if you want that - March Madness, footballs, etc. I got it for Universal Sports and BEIN Sports' pro cycling broadcasts, but that has been very disappointing, those networks don't show a fraction of the races they claim to show, and other it is merely a half hour of "highlights" the day afterwards. At this time of year, Universal seems to want to show all snow sports all the time (curling this morning) and BEIN shows all Euro soccer all the time. I cancelled after one month. I might sign up again for college football season.

F1 is still my stumbling block. I'm working with a friend in Ireland to subscribe me to Sky Now if I can download f1 and watch later.

Can you subscribe yourself, or do they require a UK address?. Can you access the website from the US, or will you use a proxy server?
Edit: oh, I see, you have to be a Sky TV sub. Doesn't look like they offer online only subscriptions. I've been thinking about subscribing to Eurosport streaming service. It is $5/mo. No F1, though. Last edited by jyl; 03-15-2015 at 03:42 PM.. |
