I hope he makes it. He appears to be a genuine gentleman, which the NFL could certainly benefit from. It's been getting increasingly thuggish in recent years and it'd be nice to see it get a bit better class of athlete as well as a more international flavor. Cool story.

This guy was about to be, officially, the highest paid NFL player in Australia (National Rugby League) .. and he walked out, to persue his passion/dream to play in the NFL, without any contract ...

Unlike other Aussies that played in the nfl, we are not talking about a kicker here. This guys talent level is off the charts. I wish him luck- the odds are long

Pretty cool. Always nice to see someone leave money behind to follow their dream. It's really pretty low risk for him, as it sounds like he can always return to rugby.

I too wish him success. Love to hear about "other" players making it into the NFL. Especially veterans whose road to the NFL was much more difficult having to worry about education first and duty to country before dedicating life fulltime to NFL.

Hayne ran the ball 53 yards against the Texans on Saturday in Houston.
For a guy brand new to the game, he seems to be doing OK.

I can't imagine anyone learning the complex NFL game in such a short time.

Football is not complex at all... It's like a circuit. Allot of stuff going on, but individually not that bad at all. It's just the speed of the plays as you increase in level

The NFL is made up of the biggest, baddest, most amazing athletes to grace a field. This guy might have some chops but There are some monsters that play that sport. I had a friend who played for Texas Tech and went on to play for the Colts for 2 seasons. Didn't make it. Just didn't have what it took he told me. Switched sports, went on to develop himself into a UFC fighter. Got a few Black belts and was super heavy weight champ when that weight class was around. The guy is huge, fast and super strong and a serious tough mo of. But he still didn't have what the NFL required....

Its a war every weekend, Monday and Thursday...

He looked faster when he was playing rugby

Glad he is playing for SF though.

Maybe if you are running highschool plays. Lots of rules to learn but the playbook to a newcomer isnt simple by any stretch. Sure, not rocket science but so many reads, if/then, timing... not simple for anyone, especially if you are new to the game.

Niner fan here.
Been watching the pre-season Niner games.
Even before I knew his history, I saw something in his style.
Hayne is not a speedster, not at all...and it appears to be to his benefit.
He takes his time to make his moves (especially in a crowd), unlike the speedster return guys who get moving so quickly and fast that it's hard for them to make critical body adjustments on the fly.
And he's a strong SOB...he'll grab a would-be tackler who's got a hold of him and toss the tackler aside. Impressive.
Apparently the Niner staff and players admire and like him...according to what I've read.

Well he made it.
Never played the game before -- Now on the roster after just 4 pre-season games.

Good for him.

Gave up $1.5 M a year playing rugby for a $100 K a year NFL contract.

Just goes to show, there is no price tag on dreams.

Yeah, a guy that worked for me chased an NFL career.

When he was fast enough he was not big enough, when he got big enough (he was a monster already) he was too slow.

The modern NFL player is big, fast, and strong with a bit of attitude thrown in for good measure.

It really is an elite sport.

Wikipedia :
"San Francisco 49ers announced they had signed undrafted free agent Hayne to a three-year contract with a base salary of $US1,575,000 over duration of the contract and a $US115,000 guarantee should he not make 53-man roster in his first preseason"

Jarryd used to do all that without the helmet and padding when he played football in Sydney.
He is sadly missed at Parramatta... but there is no way he would have got that sort of money if he stayed.

Good luck champ
