I'm 6'1'' and 190lbs

And my doctor tells me to lose weight. What does he say to folks that are really overweight?

No. You aren't overweight. I'm 6'4+", weigh between 195, and 205. Tall and slim, but my doc tells me the same thing.

If you google bmi for your weight, height etc it will tell you the weight range you should be in. If you are more than the appropriate range then you have greater risk of heart attack, stroke, diabetes etc etc. Life can be brutal and can be shortened by lifestyle.
Your choice.

The gov't. BMI chart is BS. When I was in the best shape of my life, as in running a few marathons a year, lean and with 34" jeans hanging on me like a robe, the BMI chart said I was obese. My knees couldn't take that kind of mileage and I eventually switched to more weight lifting and lighter cardio work. Now the BMI chart would say I'm near death.

Tell him he's fired due to his deficiency in math and statistics.

Do you know what they call the guy who graduates at the bottom of his med school class?

"Doctor".

I am 5"10 and 175 lbs and people all the time tell me how skinny I am, and how I should gain some weight. The BMI says I should be about 150 or so. I think the doctors all want better health for their patients by staying thin, eating well, and staying away from diabetes, and other weight disorders, while family and friends are all overweight and view us as slight and sickly.

I'm 6'4" and 225. I used to be called morbidly obese at this same height and weight. Now I'm just obese. Go figure. He told me I should be 190.

In most moderately athletic people, BMI is a nonsense metric

+1 on this. I am 5'10 and 173 lbs. Most of everybody tells me, my wife and daughter that we are underweight. I ignore the critics. It is easier to move around if you are normal weight. Imagine if you are 20 lbs overweight it is like carrying a 20lb suitcase strapped to your butt. No thanks. Besides the BMI index is not govt. but rather heart, stroke, foundation assoc. guidelines etc.

I'm sure that's what they tell most everyone today. Unless you are anorexic!

I'm the same as Guy. Usually in the low 170's, but my ideal weight is 167. I don't know why, but I always felt just right at that weight, although it's been a while since I weighed that. Most of my friends are 30+ pounds overweight. I don't think I could stand that. I've always felt the BMI chart was BS too.

Seems like these days they are looking for a BMI below 25.0. I think to get to that for 6'1", you would need to lose 4-6#.

I'm around 6'1.5". Around 3 years ago I was in the 210-215 range. I definitely had more fat than I wanted. Right now I'd down around 181, and I feel and look much better. Honestly, I could probably lose another 5 or 6#. If I started working out and put on more muscle I would be fine, but I still wouldn't mind getting a little more fat off of my stomach. I figure I'm not doing too bad for 44.

BMI is something I can't follow. I think body fat percentage is a better marker. While I'm trying to get bellow 200, currently at 220 with close to 18" biceps when flexed and quads to match. BMI says 174 or less, I'd look like a cancer patient considering 200 would put me into 32" waisted pants properly fitted. Blood work a week ago was excellent except for 201 total cholesterol with excellent ratios. Couple weeks away from being 48 years old.
