Just opened up the left lower wing, no critter damage, looks like the day I built it: Note the dark Resorcinol Glue that I used, this was the old powder and resin glue you cant get anymore, too bad cuz it was some great stuff:

That all looks pretty GD pristine. Resorcinol, interesting stuff, surprised it is not more toxic, with the benzene ring and all. Looks to be a pretty useful molecule. What can't we get from trees?

What was so great about the glue? An epoxy where one part is powder sounds pretty groovy, but there are a lot of good epoxies out there. If you don't have it, does it compromise the project?

You have to remember this was back in 1985 and the epoxies did not have the track record I wanted at the time, the resorcinal went back decades in boat building, we will be using the epoxy now since you cannot get the old resorcinal glue with the resin anymore, only a water mix.

They used to make a heat moldable acrylic in Germany called rohadur. It was a clear reddish plastic, the cat's ass for making orthotics, best stuff ever, easy to handle, heat mold numerous times and it would not get brittle, or really change at all. Had the perfect characteristics for an orthotic, firm, but not too hard, could be made thin so it would fit in your Ferragamo loafers, or whatever. They quit making it. Turns out the guys working in the factory where they made it were turning up with liver cancer. It was some sort of methyl methacrylate. If you have ever worked with it, you know is moderately nasty smelling stuff, and you don't want to get any on you. I have used it where I put the suction right over it while mixing it, the newer kits seal.

How did the old glue smell?

What I remember it was not strong smelling, it was like a musty sweet smell, I remember it saying something about formaldehyde too?

Craig - you can still get the real resin/powder type resorcinol.
Look for Aerodux 185 if you really want it.

Personally, I like T-88.

We have both lower wing ailerons shortened up and now cutting into the top wings, need to make the spars, the lowers are ready to cover

You can see how long they used to be, the spar attached to the rear wing spar and filled in.

Craig... hopefully this will prod you along...

I rolled mine out of the hangar today, finally fully assembled.

Sure, it still has some squawks and some "to do's" remaining, but it felt good to do hear it make noise for the first time in 4 years.

Oooh... Skybolt, one of the best looking biplanes kits out there. I once saw a stunning Skybolt at El Monte (KEMT), painted silver fuselage with deep blue wings.

Nice rides cgarr and cashflyer.

I've put in quite a few hours using a friends Pietenpol Air Camper and had a partnership in a Whittman Tailwind but never built one.

Is been a very busy summer but got the wings covered and sealed. Shortened the lower ailerons and added them to the top wing. Cant wait to get it in color in the sprint and see how she handles with ailerons on both wings!

That is awesome. My favorite as a kid.

Glad to see the wings coming together. They look awesome. And you will love the responsiveness with upper and lower alierons. I love doing fabric work. Learned on "Serial No. 3" first production Staggerwing. We used Grade A Cotton and Buterate Dope IIRC. I have worked with the Poly Fiber system on my Bellanca Viking and T6. Really nice to work with.

Call me crazy, but I too like to rib stitch.

Working on one thing at a time, got all the controls hooked up and centered. The connecting rod I might streamline with some spruce I think would look nice
