Cassettes? Boombox?

Another post about Christmas shopping for my son.

He has gotten quite into cassette tapes and classic rock, pop, etc. As examples, lately he is listening to Stevie Wonder, The Doors, Elton John, Stevie Nicks, Jimi Hendrix, Tears For Fears, Donovan, Talking Heads, James Taylor. Oh, and Edith Piaf. And let's not forget Kansas. Really. We went to a fair where Kansas was playing, my son was so excited, and I think the band was just as excited. Look, a fan with all his teeth! But I digress.

The classic music I get, but the cassette tape thing I don't really. I mean, we have Spotify. . . This weekend he asked me to look for "one of those boxes that has two cassette tapes so you can record from one to the other." Can you imagine. What's next, eight track or reel to reel? Maybe he'll make girls stop Snapchatting him and use a CB radio instead?

Anyway, I figured I'd get him a boombox and a mess of cassettes.

So: if you have any of those - that is, a boombox or a mess of cassettes - that you consider just clutter, and you want to get rid of it aka sell it pretty cheaply, please let me know. Oh, but the music should be good ***** - he's not into country or rather, I don't want to listen to Crystal Gayle all over again.

(Hearing "Yellow Brick Road" from his room now. Hey, it is lots better than what some parents of fifteen year old boys have to listen to.)

I am amazed how many young folk know the artists of the music I grew up hearing.
At the Bistro one night there were a young twenty-something couple and, as I was wondering if they were appreciating anything I was doing, they asked if I could do "Sister Golden Hair".

Wow! I'm stuck in the '70s and I'm still current!

I threw one away just a few months ago. It was in my garage for years but I had not turned it on in many years. I have a cheap old laptop and a wi-fi connection to my home router so I just listen to Pandora and I don't have to do anything put press play. That old boom box would have been perfect. It played CDs and cassettes. I asked a lot of friends if they might one one and no one wanted it.

I put it on the curb in front of my office. That is a great spot to get rid of almost anything with any possible value.

I can understand your sons interest in classic rock, that is what I listen to.

I can't understand wanting to mess with a stupid cassette tape. They were better than 8 track (BTDT) but that is not saying much. I gave away my 8 track collection 20 years ago or so.

My son is 15.5 and starting to drive, he loves Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and Pink Floyd just like his old man. Maybe it was me cranking these artists up at a young age that molded his thinking, but I believe that the new music doesn't have the same level of artistic skill that bands from the 70s had. No one today can make a guitar talk like Jimmy Page, or run the keyboards like John Lord, or harmonize like Pink Floyd.

I have a whole lot of 80s (and some 90s) era tapes I'd be happy to donate. I'd rather they go to someone who'll appreciate them than just going to a landfill.

I have a double cassette player in my bedroom and turn it one in the morning while showering, etc. With about 8 briefcases of tapes to rotate through - all classic rock of course - it never gets boring.

You can find these on eBay....here's just one:
New Supersonic Stereo Boombox MP3 CD Player Am FM Radio with Dual Cassette Deck | eBay

Or in pawn shops.

The ultimate is to make compilation tapes. I have a ton of these I made back in the 90's...the last era for decent rock.

There is a lot of good music being made these days, you just won't find it on traditional commercial stations.

Probably 3 years ago now I replaced the battery on my Mazda, started scanning stations to set my presets and found these guys, KXT 91.7 | Independent Music Radio for North Texas Publicly funded station. Its the only preset I have in the car and it's on 99% of the time.

Good mix of classic, upcoming and local artists. Weekend mornings can get a little odd as they do some specialty shows and some of the DJ's have that kinda breathy hipster style but I don't listen for the DJ's.

Snippet of this mornings playlist.

My 10 year old daughter is currently on a Black Sabbath "We Sold Our Soul for Rock and Roll" kick. It's somewhat surreal seeing her signing all the words to Iron Man.

Sent you a PM, POP.

Browsing boomboxes on eBay now.

I thought of a useful way to channel his apparent predilection for retro - I'm going to get him a slide rule. It is a good way to learn and appreciate logarithms, which is what they are studying in his algebra class currently. log ( a ^ b) = b log (a ) and all that.

So just what is wrong with reel to reel?

You get much better quality sound out of it than cassettes.

What did you say?
I can't hear you.
Is the music too LOUD?

Needs belts but is a rival for reel to reel if used correctly.

Cool decks - alas I never had a reel to reel.

But I'm not going to get him a deck - we don't even have a stereo anymore, although I am sure next year he will discover vinyl, and I did save my turntable - so I'm starting to search eBay, thrift stores, flea markets, etc for an old-school boombox.
