Anyone else think it's impossible to buy jewelry for a woman?

I can't pick a sweater my wife will like. How am I supposed to pick jewelry? I think taste in jewelry is so damn subjective. What I like for her is not usually what she likes. I'm like 2 and 100 in this game. Walk up to a display case. She asks, " okay, which one do you think I like?".
"Blah...."
Swing and a miss.

Some of you guys are good at this?

I have no trouble. Bought a beautiful watch for my wife for her birthday. She loves it.

I have done it but you're right it's not easy. Jewellery to a woman is a very personal and subjective thing.
And a woman does not want to feel like she got ripped off when buying jewellery. There has to be value there she can see.
Which means often "we" can't see that same value.

A watch is easy. Just buy something that matches what she already has or wears. Two tone silver and gold is a safe bet IMO.

But if you want to really impress her buy flowers. I really don't understand it fully but women love flowers.

OK but could you choose a ring or bracelet for her?

I am surprisingly good at this.

It's the one spin off of being a rock guy that actually can land me some chicks. I can walk into a gem shop and have just as much fun looking the the jewels as a chick, but I can actually tell ya a thing or two about the mineral to make it more special.

Two words: paraiba tourmaline

Buy that one for her, and she will drool over it for hours.

I have never bought my wife a gift she didn't return ( unless she picked it out herself ). I gave up a few years ago buying her anything.

If you still want the element of surprise, from her "favourite" jewellery store, buy the ugliest piece that you can return go gift card.

Most jewelry stores around here have a wish list. I can go in make a list of what I want and they email the list to hubby.

Try that.

We never would have thought of that. Winner.

A fringe benefit of having a pawn shop is letting my wife "try out" anything she wants. She has returned a couple of items.
I've had to pony up for a number of custom made items over the years but was able to use a local jeweler buddy for the build.

My wife's father was a jeweler. That was a hard act to follow, try buying jewelry for her! My father in law would come home with a pair of earrings he made made for her every month until he retired. Yes, she has hundreds of earrings. I never bought a pair for her, duh.

I have bought her watches, necklaces, a bracelet and rings all with her not knowing about it and I was successful. But, having her there with me in a jewelry store is so much easier.

You've got to get a fell for what she likes. Buy it under the provision that you are able to return it and buy another piece if she doesn't like it. Of course with her in tow.

Same problem here. Thank God my wife isn't a crazy jewelry lover. She was more a sports girl, so she doesn't really get off on that stuff.

To my credit, I did pick her engagement ring all on my own. She still loves it to this day.

I have a backup plan (jewelry) for every Christmas season and birthdays for my wife. If I can't figure out something to get for her, I have one jeweler that I can count on for great suggestions. The young woman that helps me out has an uncanny ability to know what my wife will like.
I call it buying my way out of a problem.....

I have bought quite a few things for my wife, a really nice watch, really, some ear rings, some necklaces, some rings, notthing cheap. I know she really likes everything because she keeps it in her jewelry box for safe keeping and never wears the stuff.

You could buy her a gift certificate at a jewellery store if you are not sure what to buy her.
Myself I hate buying stuff for the wife and she does not like it and then I have to return it.

My wife does not like or wear jewellery. The only expensive thing that I could buy her and she would not return it would be a VW Jetta!
