Seems like a d-bag move to charge for the tickets when they were implied free, but it's also sort of a d-bag move to offer to pay, then ***** when the offer is accepted.

I don't know that its a "misunderstanding". It was a breech of the etiquette of the brotherhood.

I don't see how you would assume "Does one of you want them?" means he's giving them away for free.
When you test drive a car, and the seller then asks "So, do you want it?", would you assume he's giving it away?

Frankly, this type of ambiguous communication is best left to the females.
As is offering to pay when you don't really mean it (and then getting offended).

When I get these types of solicitations, I NEVER assume it's free.
Your reply should have been, "I might be interested. How much?"
If you don't like the price, then say "Thanks, but I'll pass"
If that's too honest and direct, then reply with, "Ok, if I want them, I'll let you know"

Also, the fact that you drive a Porsche didn't help your case, either.

Quote de Moses

1) I offer a friend tickets I can't use.

2) He offers to pay. I refuse.

3) He sends me a thank you note or a bottle of wine after the game.

In my world that is the Circle of Ticket Life, described exactly. Every transaction in life should be so simple, understood.

There is a parallel world in the lending and borrowing of farm equipment or asking for help when you need it: the only difference is return the item in the same or better shape and be ready to help when they need it. Oh, and beer rather than wine.
Ditto. I never accept money when helping a friend. Buy a few rounds at the bar......absolutely. More importantly, be there to help when I need a hand.

If I offer someone something like that, I intend to give it to them. Offering to pay was fine, the asking for a couple hundred bucks, I don't know. Maybe you could take me out to dinner or buy me some good booze is more likely to be my response if I am giving someone some Kings or Sacramento Republic tickets and they are asking about money. I had a patient give me some tickets to a baseball game, he would not even let me buy him a beer. Of course he already had one when I saw him, they are pretty big beers and he is diabetic, so maybe that is a bad example, but you get the idea. Yes, it would diminish my opinion of the person in question.

So Moses what was the outcome? Did you have to indeed pay full price or did the situation change once you came face to face?

BTW, great game! Go Flames go!

He probably didn't expect you to offer to pay for them and got caught off-guard when you offered. He probably thought in that quick instant you're a doctor and can afford it/he could use the money and said okay. I suspect if he was well off, he would have declined your offer. He can't be doing too badly to have center ice season tickets, though. Unless he gets them for free, in which case he should have declined your offer (and you shouldn't have offered if you knew they were Corporate).

It all seems fairly trivial to me. You made an offer you could afford that should have been declined and wasn't. He's not so classy, but he had two seconds to think about your offer, which isn't enough time to come to the right decision.

If I 'offer' tickets to people I know well in advance of their reply if I expect to be paid for them. (And my offer would either say 'free' or '$xxxx for the pair', or 'These are on Craigslist for $250, for family and friends they are $200')

And if I 'slipped' and said 'Yea, $240 for the pair', and then subsequently thought that price was unfair, I would adjust my price when the purchaser paid me.

It was either poorly thought out or classless on his part. Move on.

Had a GREAT time. Sharks couldn't find the net but my son and I had a great time. He's 24 now and man, I love spending time with my boy. No hard feelings at all toward my wife's cousin. He's just outside the favor circle. No big deal. People are different. I understand that.

I have a good friend who was pretty outrageously generous when his business was soaring. He fell on very tough times. Our group still includes him on dinners and golf trips. We pool our money and pick up his hotel and golf fees and we pick up the restaurant tabs. And every single time, someone will remind Tom of his great generosity when times were better. We jokingly tell him we need to carry him for another 10 years till we're caught up. This is one of the things I treasure most about my close friends. We remember kindnesses and we don't keep score.

Happy Thanksgiving!

My good friend's dad has a quote attributed to him that says,

"When I give away a buck, I make a hundred. If I try to steal a buck, I lose a thousand."

He made about a $billion, BTW. Started out as a farmer in Italy, came to America as an immigrant with nada.
