Oh yeah, most I have used are flushable. I was told by an architect that in older cities, space in some of these buildings are just too small to have a big old fashion western toilet.

Those squat style setups were everywhere in Europe in the '80s. Some small town train stations still have them in Japan. I have to say, assuming that position makes for a very efficient movement. No time for a newspaper or checking the email

That's the factory standard in China. Makes you avail yourself to the hotel facilities whenever possible....

Guess I am on the wrong side of the border.
Here is the sign, and the local custom, at my favorite bar in Baja ![]() I am thinking a bidet would be just as, hmmm, different to this good old American boy.

How is it that nobody has mentioned the heated toilet seat yet? Probably the greatest thing about the japanese toilets, IMO.

Most of the places that I went to in Japan in the late 70s and early 80s were like that. It was a bit weird for a kid from the states.

In France as a teen... Had a to take a leak while in a very non-touristy area and restaurant. The urinal was accessible to everyone and in total view of anyone that walked by, not my thing at that time.... Noticed the door to my left. Yes! Crapper.... Went in, only a porcelain square with a hole at one end and a couple of foot pads. No worries, standing up. Went to flush, thinking that only the porcelain area would get wet. Well, the water kept coming and coming and rising... Flooded the entire floor. I was on my tip toes trying to not get my shoes wet.

Parts of Mexico I have visited, there's no drain, I don't know what the heck the bucket of water was for sitting there? Some poor dude must have to clean or remove all that ****. I know there's no pumper truck like we have here. |

It did! But the entire floor still flooded. Maybe it was partially clogged or something. Only used it once.

I had a summer job during hi school at a local cabinet shop and noticed the bathroom stank like hell. I had to breath deep and hold my breath just to take a leak. I am told by the owner that its a habit from the Mexican guys working there. Their water pressure its so low that the toilet paper will clog the drain for sure. Toilet paper is normally dumped into a basket of some type and never, ever down the drain.

Bingo ditch
When I was in the Navy during Nam, offline, we went to a couple seaports in Japan. Bar sections had trenches running along the outside of the bars. Called Binjo ditches as memory served. Guys and gals would leave the bar, step outside and do their business in the ditch. A lot of drunk sailors tripped and fell in the ditches. No fun sitting next to them when returning back to the ship!

Still waiting for a technical description of the process, i.e. what is the difference in the bidet and shower functions?
