Your glassed cost that much?

My glasses are 3 years old and are pretty scratched up from running around construction sites. I didn't want to wait and deal with appointments, so off to the mall and get them at Lenscrafters. My wife and I both got new glasses, but the bill was just under 1400 bucks Yeah, we got high index, transition lens, but still, that's a lot of money. Idon't remember it to be that much the last time. are you guys paying that much for your glasses.

Four years ago I took a chance and bought some inexpensive prescription glasses from Hong Kong (on ebay). They were so cheap that I felt I could use them as 'spares' if they didnt work out.
I was finding that I was scratching up my glasses a lot & was sick of paying a fortune for new ones.

Mine are rimless titanium with high index HOYA transition lens & scratch protection & cost (then) about $200. You email them a copy of your Prescription

Very pleased with these glasses & now wear them most of the time.
On ebay check out:

From my experience about 4 years ago I bought prescription graduated lens glasses from Costco for $300 Can. I use reading glasses mostly around the house as I abuse them and they are cheap.

My wife got Silhouette frameless eyeglasses that were very expensive (no line bifocals). So I told her there was no way I would spend that much for glasses...until I got there and tried them on. They're so light, it feels like I'm not wearing glasses. I've had these frames for probably 15 years now and have replaced the lenses about 3 times. One arm broke a couple of years ago and I had to replace it. Bottom line: expensive frames but well worth it.--Dave

We get our glasses at Costco now. Far, far less expensive than Lenscrafters. Just as good results. Not as good a selection of fashion frames. Paying $700 at Lenscrafters just didn't compute.

Make sure to get white rimmed transitions for Douchus Maximus status.

At that price you should just be able to hire someone to see for you. My lasik was far less... And is somewhat permanent.

Lasik is amazing, the story of its development is astonishing...

Check out classicspecs.com
Frames with prescription lenses are around $80.
They have really cool frames. Imo.

With that said, I'm planning on finally getting lasik this year. Want to do it before I hit 40.

I'm due for a new pair, as the dog ate my Rx ones and I've been relying on el cheapo 1.5X readers for the last two years. Anywho, with insurance and after factoring in all of that incidental crap (anti-glare, scratch resistance, rose coloring, etc), I think I was out almost $400 out of pocket for lenses and frames.

A big part of the problem, I think, is that most of the glasses frames from the designer houses - the cool ones, the ones we all want - are made/distributed by a single company called Luxotica. It's a Swiss company that has a near monopoly on glasses frames. They keep the prices on their products artificially high. I think Lenscrafters may be owned by this company as well, and also Pearl. And most dispensers contract with them in order to get the frames people want. I think that Costco is one of the few places that do not contract with them. Which is one reason, I suppose that (at my local Costco, at least) the frame selection is rather small and uninspiring.

Yes, I thought they were expensive.

I fell for one of those chain ad 2 pair for $99 deals and ended up paying close to $650. Didn't even realize it until I went and paid for them. Cheap feeling frames and sub-par service. Paid but have told everyone I know about it. This year it is back to my old comfortable frames (that I have had for 10 years) and paying $300 to have new lenses cut. The bad part is that chain is next door to my doctor... but the good thing is his prescription can be filled at most places.

Correct, Luxotica owns RayBan, Maui Jim, Lenscrafters, etc.

I buy the frames I want and bring them to the optician of my choice.

My latest fave frames are AO Safety. Only $25 and very sturdy, kind of 50's retro but look good. Costco won't make lenses for them, because they cannot make safety lenses and they perceive liability if they put non-safety lenses in safety frames. So I'll get my next glasses made by a little neighborhood place. The rest of the family has found frames they like at Costco and has been very pleased with their service.

My last Pearl Vision pair was over $400 US. Then I tried Zenni online for $50 US. Not going back to Pearl.

Wow, talk about a timely subject. I have a pair I use for work and flying, they are getting pretty beat up and need replacement. I will check costco out. I also have a pair my wife got for me, I don't really like them, they are some fancy designer dolce banana or something. Very light but they are comical in their near "horned rimmed" look. She said if I knew how much they cost I would wear them. I told her to keep it a secret then.

I think Luxottica is Italian,
I got my last regular Sunglasses at Oakley, I had to take them back to the shop once and am very happy with the service.
