What rubbish. This boomer's been working since I was 15, six years of military service, worked full-time while getting both BS and MS degrees, only debt is mortgage which will be paid off at retirement, banked enough $ over the years for a reasonable retirement, raised a great kid that's off to an excellent career, training millenials to be exceptional engineers after I punch out of the workforce.

Millennials, whah!

There have only been 5 days since the summer of 1972 that I did not have a steady paycheck. I worked two jobs for a few years. I don't have any debt and SS is a joke as far as what it will pay me back.

This is in before it is moved to PARF!

When my daughter graduated from college a year ago the owners of the privately held company that she had interned for her last two years in school wanted to meet my wife and I.

They had offered her a full time position, so, you know, they had that going for them.

All they wanted to do was thank us and ask us how we had managed to raise someone who just got things done, never whined, turned to and finished what she said she was going to do.

I of course, made sure they knew exactly where my young Jeddi Princess got her skills...

Her mother.

Truly funny stuff -- First I am a boomer - my sons Millies - I think our parents looked at us as hippies -lay abouts = etc. My WW2 vet pop did - but-when I served he was an awesome backup-when my oldest served in Irag -I had his back. (My Pop more so) All this stuff is just generational crap - Boomers like to say Ms are lazy etc --never been my experience. All of this strikes me as an age thing - every generation thinks it had the best music, movies, stuff in general -- It is what it everwas.

Thats great to hear. You did a good job. My two girls are off on their own, independent, and they will be off on their own. All you can do is set them on the right course and let them go.

I haven't ever been unemployed since 1982, whether it be from wise moves, good skill, or dumb luck. I haven't felt the need to call in sick once a month like most young people I know, and have never been arrested or fired, and can't understand people who are content being on the government coffers and laying around drinking and having babies.

LAZINESS is my worst pet peeve, and maybe the younger generation just doesn't feel the need to have any responsabilities and this is why having a job at all, or even showing up every day on time is a foreign concept.

Just more lazy whining from the generation who is the poster child for lazy whining. I hope the article restores some of their unearned high self-esteem..

my father is a boomers and die-hard republican who watches Fox news religiously while living on social security and food stamps while now looking into subsidized housing after gambling away a small fortune after having retired at the age of 43. I don't know that he is entirely representative of boomers but is the very definition of someone who oozes entitlement.

Unearned ? bull shiz I worked my azz off for high self esteem......I deserve it, and have absolutely nothing to feel guilty about. I have worked through more injuries and illness than most full families deal with....3 bouts of cancer, 3 bouts of heart failure from the drugs that fix cancer, bloodclots, an accident that almost killed me (17 broken bones, lacerated liver) 2 years ago and SOMEHOW, I still manage to make it to work everyday.

USMC at 17-21, in 1971; college paid by me and the VA (a contractual agreement) graduated at 25 (worked as a mechanic to supplement funds), 1st full time job at 25, bought my 1st house at 26. Married at 30, then kids. Married 31 years.

Will have "contributed about $300K into SS between me and my employers by the time I retire in 4 years. If you believe in market clearing price of labor, I actually paid both sides of my SS, but that's a different subject.

It will take about 9 years to just get back my SS "contributions" without any interest.

Drew 6 weeks of UE one year 30+ years ago (that I had paid into). Never got another check back from any government, except for some tax refunds (that I had overpaid).

Yeah, I'm entitled.

CP, I will give you that the boomers and their parents, the older folks in Congress and the Senate, effed you and many of us with hiding money and putting SS into the General Fund, but that was done about 50 years ago.

Entitlement

I could give a rip about this topic. There will never be any agreement. As the above Boomers have stated, our generation was taught a work ethic. I had my social security card at 16 , spent 4 years in the Navy ( 4 years 13 days to be exact) and have never drawn unemployment. Retired from a career with Ma Bell and anything I have, I earned. You could probably find a nice discourse on the topic on facebook.

Exactly...the OP is a spoiled child who tweaks his nose at folks that have busted their butts for over 40 years. When he has done the same, then he can ask for a little respect.

I think it is clear that we, the "boomers", have indeed failed the "millenials" in many different ways. Just not the ways in which this article claims.

I see our biggest failures all relating to an across the board softening of standards of achievement, coupled with a way too accessible "safety net" for those who somehow still manage to fail. We are witnessing the fruits of the first adult generation where everyone got an award just for showing up, where there are no winners because there cannot be losers, where even answers to simple math problems in the lower grades are whatever the fragile young ego would like them to be, where if spelling and grammar are just too hard, well then, don't worry about it.

This general lowering of standards until everyone "excels" (in their own way...) has left us with a lazy, sloppy generation who will bytch and complain at the slightest hint of any demands put upon them, and at anything short of immediate "success" of the sort they grew up with. A generation that will blame everyone but themselves for their failures and struggles to be accepted in the workforce by the "boomers", because nothing has ever been their fault.

I find this thread to be the very height of irony; posted up by our very own poster child for everything that has gone wrong with this generation of "millenials". Clearly very poorly educated (if any of our tax dollars contributed, I want our money back...), he persists with the belief that he is someone special (because he has been told as much his entire life) who can offer a unique and witty perspective. When his best arguments are consistently and authoritatively debunked and discredited by some of the wise old graybeards who frequently engage him (for the life of me, I don't know why - way too much like a cat playing with a dead mouse), he has no idea how to react, other than as the insolent child, penning grade school level retorts (replete with grade school level grammar, punctuation, and spelling) that offer no substance of any kind.

Yet even when the old farts around here try to help him out, try to tell him how to raise his credibility, he lashes back. It's their fault they can't understand his deeper insights, and good, sharp, professional communication skills are just so yesterday. They don't matter anymore, his ideas transcend such pedestrian concerns. He has, after all, been told that all of his life.

I guess I'm glad he hangs out over in PARF so much. He serves as an example of what we are up against, who we are handing the baton so to speak. We are currently hiring from this generation at work; the percentage of real "keepers" is the lowest I have ever seen it. It would be difficult to explain to those of you who are not in a similar situation, where you can see this generation at "work" (such as they call it) for yourselves. Granted, not all have the horrible intellect/ego ratio demonstrated by the OP (he is a pretty extreme example), but enough of them are far enough out of equilibrium that they truly worry me.

They blame everyone but themselves. And you know what? They are right. We molly-coddled them into this state. It really is our fault.
