I remember back in 1968 when the movie 2001 A Space Odyssey was in the theaters.
I did the math and realized I was going to be in my late 40s and OLD. ![]() Of course I remember reading the book 1984 when I was a 16 and thinking that was a long time into the future.

Just watched Terminator from 1984 with my family. The future run by the machines is 2029. That's only 14 years - right around the corner!

For some reason, I've always been in awe what humans accomplished between 1900 and 1918.
Manned flight, the Model T, a World War, a shift from an agrarian to an urban or industrial society - the list goes on and on.... the nation (and the world) were turning a corner to a whole 'nother era. I always "felt" as though those were some big, big years, long years where big thinkers were getting lots of great things done. Having said that, the last 15 years have gone by in a blur, and I wonder if I'm so close to history that I don't recognize the touchstones... What of "our" turn of the century? Are big thinkers getting great things done? Have we turned another corner? The period of time between 1900 and 1918 will forever be known as The Progressive era. What will our grandkids call this part of history? (Will they have jetpacks and time travel in 2059? (so to answer your question, yeah, it is pretty incredible that it's already 2015!) |

What's that saying? If I knew I was going to last this long (phew, 2015) I'd have taken better care of myself.

Interviewed a kid the other day who was born in 1991. Damn that made me feel old.
Recently went on a date with a lovely girl from the office who was really into me but I broke it off before it went too far when I learned she was 14 years younger than I am (I look youngish for my age and I'm sure she knew I was older than she was but not THAT much older...) Damn hot and smart but I just couldn't see it going anywhere long term with an age gap that large. In a better situation now anyway.

if we needed flying cars we would have them. Instead, we have email, internet, and robot manufacturing. Much more applicable to the needs of current society than a flying car.
I remember a high school writing project based on our own vision of the year 2000. That was in 1976. It seemed so far away I could hardy conceive it. BTW…My people-mover sidewalks never came about either ![]()

Time magazine declared the personal computer its "Machine of the Year" in 1982. But just as it took generations to improve the steam engine to the point that it could power the Industrial Revolution, it's also taken time to refine our digital engines.
Some say we are in the second machine age unfolding right now. |

Still no instant fusion, flying cars, hoverboards or interplanetary travel.
People are actually becoming less intelligent.

We've obviously made advancements in some areas like medicine and electronics but as a society.........it seems we have back slid.
To those who say it's always been this way - that's my point. By now (2015) you'd think we would like in a more utopian society. No jealousy or division of the masses - very little crime - a smoothly running and efficient government - communities kept very tidy. I just don't see it - and I don't think it's because I'm some kind of cynic. The town I live in for example...wonderful geographic location - lots of natural beauty. But because of people - the place is very dilapidated and trashy looking, aside from the occasional property owner who does keep his place nice and tidy. Can't we do better? It's disappointing.

There in lays the great challenge....people or is it human nature.
As you stated one example Baz. " I use to be a people person, then people ruined it" (just kidding) :-) |
